    Hi all

Always wanted to grow a Walnut tree & mulberyy all sorted with the mulberry put it in small its now 5 feet high no fruit yet this will be its 4th year !!!! but which Walnut variety and whats the best size to plant ????

Plus are they best bought in a pot or bare rooted I have a nice spot for only the one tree so are they self fertile plus I dont know if any one else grows them by me .

It will be sunny well drained but holds the water about 25 feet from the River that acts more like a stream so should be ok ???

    Hi Spruce,

There are 15 species of walnut to plant, not counting the cultivars and varieties, so the choice is ultimately up to you. Generally they're not fussy about soil conditions, but do like sunny, well-drained spots. They can grow to be medium-to-large trees, given time and space. You could go for the common walnut Juglans regia, or go for the smaller, shrubby Texan walnut Juglans microcarpa, if you can find a stockist that is.

If you're thinking of planting now then you need to be buying container grown or burlap-sack roots as the ground may be too cold to put in bare rooted trees.

If you're not in a hurry Walnuts are easily grown from seed.
Every year in our garden I find Walnut seedlings emerging, where nuts from a nearby neighbours' tree have been buried and then forgotten by squirrels.
A few years ago I potted up a nut which I'd unearthed while doing some weeding, it had split open and just begun to germinate.
I used a fairly large (5 lt) pot and within a couple of years I had a reasonable sized tree ready to plant out.
I can't remember the exact year I planted it, but I'd guess it was about 5 or 6 years ago. It has now reached a height of 8-10 feet and produced quite a decent crop of walnuts for the first time last year.

I'm not sure how many choices you have, but I assume you looking for J.regia and a variety at that which crops early.
Pomona fruits appear to have "broadview" which is supposed to be good for cropping and frost resistant

Just never had the space for one but would have liked to have grown my own fresh walnuts.:)
