    Hi Welcome to the forum

    Couple of questions first.

does it get full sun all day shade etc ? as this will help us with some choices of plant
What type of soil have you ? very dry , boggy , well drained ?

I would say at least 12 inches at least or you can just cut a circle out or square doesnt have to be the whole lenthgh unless you are planing to grow other plants along the bottom of the fence

What part of the UK are you

      thanks for the reply.

yes it will have full sun all day. there is no shade. the soil is not dry and is well drained. there will be fresh layer of soil going on top though.

i also intend to have plants grown there. is it possible to have the climbing plant grown from a small spot in one corner and grow along the trellis on top?

      i'm an in birmingham

      Hi

You have lots of choices of climers to grow why stop at one I have a fence with honey suckle roses clematis jasmine ivy looks amazing during the year , sure others will help out with choices , why grow in a pot when you can plant in the border soil , no a small pot would not be ideal to suport a large plant that you want to cover a fence , it would need watering everyday in the summer plus feeding and depending what you grow the winter would freeze the pot so you are just wasting your ££ and us gardenrs and that includes you want the best for our plants, half barrels and the biggest you coiuld get would be my 1st choice but still needs watering much prefer the border soil

      Hope this helps a little

Post another question about what to have growing on a sunny fence

sorry you misunderstood, i meant having soil (about 18inches away from fence) going along the rear fence but only have the climbing plant grow from the corner. this way i can grow other small plants in the rest of the soil along the rear fence. the climb plant will go straight up in the corner and across the trellis along the top of the rear fence, which is 13 feet wide.

i want a climbing plant which will need less or no maintenance to it. but a few little flowers on it would be nice :)

:loll:Sorry I thought it said pot  !!!

All plants need some care and easy ones to go for clematis Montana is a strong grower very little pruning apart from a tidy up after it has flowerd and will easily cover that size of fence but you will need to tie the shoots for them to grow along and train , honey suckle , jasmin another two easy ones that would be my choice for what you are after and all have flowers .

Spruce, as always, is spot on with his advice:snork::thumbsup: . I can't see why you have to have the climber in the corner as the stems of it won't take up all that much space and you can plant in front of it. Planting centrally would give you the advantage of getting the climber to extend it's length fully both ways.

As spruce says all plants need some sort of care and maintenance you just need one that takes the least. It all depends how long and how much cover you need.
