An old builder's "con" is that if you're having some work done, they'll start on a Monday, but then disappear for a couple of days, going back to a job they've not yet finished. As they've "started" on yours, you've not got many options for getting rid of them easily and getting someone else to do the job.

When I was recovering from my hip operation in early October, my daily walk on my crutches took me past a house over the back of our garden. It's next door to the house behind ours. The owners had a concrete base put in, for what I thought was to be a garage, as it was about 20’ by about 10’.
A week later, some sort of “kit” must have arrived and was piled up on the base to about the height of about eight feet and covered in plastic sheeting. It was left there for two months, until this week a party of men arrived on Tuesday morning to work on it. The noise of hammering at 8.30am. woke us up.
It’s that big you can’t avoid seeing it if I look out of our bedroom window, although it’s at least 180 feet away. It wasn’t a garage it’s a huge “Alpine style” summerhouse. After three days the hammering stopped and they’ve disappeared. The house is complete, but they’ve just draped some plastic sheeting over the top held down with some ladders, the exterior walls are bare wood. They’re obviously not coming back until next week. I’ve noticed the guy pottering around it, but obviously nothing’s happening over the week-end. It would concern me that this obviously untreated wood is exposed to the elements, for a few days despite the whole thing costing, no doubt, a fortune.

this is why we put up all our sheds ourselves. they get done in a day then. but unfortunately not everyone is able bodied (or willing) enough to put up their own. it is disgusting that workmen fit it in around other jobs. one job at a time boys!!

A couple of years ago a rather pessimistic mate of mine said that they only way you can guarantee never to be ripped off, and to always get a quality and timely result, is to learn to do everything yourself. He gave examples that you have to be able to fix your own car, do all your own house maintenance, etc.

At the time I laughed at him and put it all down to his usual pessimistic outlook, but over time I'm beginning to suspect he was right all along.

Yes, sadly despite claims that we are 'civilised' these days, it still seems to be a fundamental truth that the there are always plenty of people about that thrive off those they are able to take advantage of.

Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others.
