I have always had an electric cooker but now I am having a gas one, well, this is the question, how do I know when the oven has reached the right temp??

It will stop roaring. The flame comes on full whack no matter what setting you put it on, and stays that way until it reaches the set temp, then it turns its self down so as to just maintain the heat its built up.

    You don't
I have always had a gas cooker, just set the knob to what ever "mark" the label / instructions say, turn on gas, watch it ignite* come back ever so often to see is it done yet.

    * Some cookers need batteries to ignite, some although they are gas, have an electric plug you plug in to run the timer, ignition, lights etc.

Oh, and the gas for modern cookers that plugs in too. Seriously, the gas pipe for the cooker literally plugs in to a gas outlet, but that should have already been done for you.

I had a brand new gas cooker once it was my pride and joy. Then my partner at the time, dropped a meal down the back of the oven and the food went all over the gas parts where the flame comes from!! I was furious and dumped him soon afterwards :blue thumb:...i never felt the same about that cooker again.

You have been warned Val dont forget to wear your oven mits :WINK1:

What Clueless has said is pretty close to all you need to know. It depends a bit on the size and power of the cooker but usually it should be up to temperature after about 10 minutes or so. Most cooking isn't critical with regard to starting at the right temperature but if you're doing something where it is then give it 15-20 minutes.

My gas cooker has three ovens and each one is different. Some cookers have extraction fans to keep the heat from the oven away from the knobs above and they blow air out just below where the knobs are. If yours has that facility it won't start blowing the air until the oven is at a good temperature.

In the long run, it comes down to a little bit of trial and error. If you're doing things like roasts, jacket potatoes, casseroles etc it won't make a blind bit of difference once you've had it on 10 minutes.

If you are also doing a lot of cooking on the hob at the same time then whatever you're cooking in the oven may take a little bit longer.

I much prefer to cook with gas - and I do a lot of cooking (just finished cooking lunch for a load of Mrs Shiney's students).
