    Hello all

I have a Virginia Creeper on a wall in my patio. Initially I was very keen and enthusiastic looking forward to the autumnal colours, etc. But then it went a little crazy. It choked a really nice clematis that was growing nearby :frown: and then it continued to spread along the wall attacking a well established rose. Then I discovered a new growth a good 1.5m along from the original stem and this growth is already greater than a metre long :gaah: .
So I cut all the stems off leaving the main stem exposed. I've dug up the soil around the root and tried pulling it but it's not shifting - I think it's gone under the wall.

So I'm wondering, should I get roundup and treat the top of the stem with it, (rather than spraying) and would this kill the root? I want to plant other climbers in the border so I'm concerned about using chemicals that may kill other existing or new plants.
Would be grateful for any ideas, thanks.

roundup/glyphosate only works on the leaves and not on the stem ...

so let a few leaves regrow, then spray them top and bottom

Most of my favourate plants behave in that way, i like invasive plants for some reason that kill other plants :snork:

With my ivy I cut it right down to the base of the plant and then applied tree stump killer to the exposed part of the (very thick) stems, which did the trick.

Merlewood: My brother suggested SBK Brushwood killer which looks to be the same as tree stump, so perhaps I will give that a try.

If you cover the stump with a bucket or similar once you've done it, then it keeps it dry (in case it rains) so it gets a chance to get right down into the roots. It also stops little ones/animals getting at it.
