i have been decorating houses for years ,paper/paint/fitting carpets/lino /building units/etc etc etc. for the first time, i have painted over wallpaper .i have seen it done on tv but i would never do it. on friday i gave it a go. my sister in law wanted new cushion floor in her hall ,( copy of heavy wood grain).but the hall had not been decorated for a few years.i looked at the paper ,the joins were very good it was then i decided "i am going to paint this without stripping the paper off the walls." i started at an alcove with a thick good quality emulsion, and went for lunch . i came back about an hour later ,the paper had not blistered it had not lifted from the walls .
i carried on with the whole hall with the results i found, and it turned out perfect!!.
just finished today and the effect is brilliant. her colour scheme before the make over was, blue walls ,brown doors ,orange carpet . it now has the wood grain floor, magnolia walls ,white skirting, stained wood doors(matt finish). and a very happy sister in law. a couple of tips.use a fine sandpaper at the joins of the paper
if it has been overlaped,do not use a roller use a good brush, you can put the paint on thicker to seal the paper joins. happy decorating music.

well done! i'm too lazy to paper all the time, so i have painted over paper lots of times. but our front room came out especially well last year. i painted gold emulsion (with a roller) over a light vinyl wallpaper, and the effect is stunning. the light reflects on it in different ways and it makes it shimmer :)
