Had I not been constantly wiping my eyes at the smell of mothballs emanating from the screen during last night's Olympic closing ceremony, or laughing at ice skating nuns, I might just have caught a glimpse of some athletes, instead I got George Michael and Russell Brand, along with Madness, Take That, Pet Shop Boys, The Spice Girls and Eric Idle.

'The best British rock and pop music of the last half-century?' :dunno:

I wouldn't say mothballs so much as cheese. But then this was a party, and parties often reek to high heaven of gorgonzola. You find yourself dancing around to all kinds of junk you wouldn't normally admit to having heard of, let alone anything else, especially after a couple of dodgy drinks. Or maybe that's just me. Anyway, I suppose calling it the best of British was hyperbole, but you couldn't really bill it as 'a mish-mash of assorted guff from dead peeps and artists who were prepared to turn out for a quid', could you, even if that were closer to the truth.

Personally I think chucking a bucket of water over the cauldron and setting off a few catherine wheels would probably have sufficed, but the organisers went for a party and that is what we got. I think it should have been ruthlessly edited, but at least there was something for just about everyone. There was a lot of tat but we also got Ray Davies doing Waterloo Sunset - a London classic if ever there was one - as well as Muse and Elbow. Kate Bush was there in spirit if not in person, which is probably just as well, since she'd definitely have trouble running up that hill these days without recourse to industrial quantities of Slimfast.

It's definitely time to ditch John Lennon's 'Imagine'. I mean, just imagine all the people living for today. Yeah, that should cover it, you bats old hippy. The organisers should just have rolled up completely unprepared on the first day of the Olympics, smoked some wacky baccy, staggered over to the athletes and slurred: 'yeah, man, we ... like ... thought it would be really amazing if you just ran round and round and round and round and round and round ....

And now all that's left is the bill. The nymphs are departed, and I'm off too. Goodbye everyone. It's been a blast.

I felt sorry for the athletes who had to stand for 3 hours plus NOT seeing all that lovely ballet and pervy George Michael. I mean, could they have seen very much from where they were? Come to that, nearly all the 'acts' were in black or other dark clothing (including the ballet) so it must have been pretty near impossible to make out from the top tires of the stands! I changed channels and watched a rerun of HIGNFY! Ian Hislop rules! Yay!

What I would like to know is HOW Russell Brand gets in on everything, loathsome man. He seems to be everywhere and on everything ,and has certainly made more from that horrid mess with Jonathan Ross than he did,And he gets rewarded by attending the Olympic party ,which dull or not,was a privelege to be in on.

I totally agree with you Pamsdish, he left an unwelcome stain on the closing ceremony. What type of hold does this guy have on the so called great and good?

Well said :dbgrtmb: Even this grumpy old man wouldn't moan at the party (but definitely wouldn't want to be there :roflol:) - and the athletes were really enjoying themselves :). I don't think a couple of hours of standing, and dancing around, would bother athletes much :heehee:
