Tonight I have been up to Newcastle to meet up with my former colleagues for a pint (I made sure I stayed well under the limit, having had one pint of mild bitter followed by four pints of coke).

I put £20 of petrol in the car before I set off.

I drew £50 out of a cash machine in Newcastle. More than I'd need I knew, but I might have needed a taxi if I'd got lost.

1 pint of bitter, and 4 pints of coke later, it was time to set off home. This meant driving past a town where one of the lads lives. He cadged a lift with me to save himself the £40 taxi fare. He insisted on giving me £20 towards my fuel, despite me telling him I wont have used £20 worth altogether, never mind just on his bit of the journey, but he insisted.

I've just counted up my money, and I have £60 in cash, and still more than half of the fuel I put in, so I've not only broke even, but have actually came away slightly in profit for me evening out:dbgrtmb:

There was one scary moment though. I'd parked the car in a car park that gets locked up at 10pm. We set off on the trek across toon at about 9:30pm, plenty of time to get to the car park before it closed, but I'd forgot about the closing time. The lad I was giving a lift to asked if I wanted to go the quickest way or the scenic way so he could show me some of the more impressive parts of toon. I chose the scenic route, so we walked through old cobbled streets, then through 'China town' then down the rich bit where there was a shiny new ferrari parked up. We got to the car park at 10:15pm, and it was all locked up. A sign said there was a £100 call out charge to get the car released out of hours. I phoned the number and a sympathetic chap said he'd radio the security guard and if he was still there, we'd be ok otherwise I'd have to pay the callout. Luckily the security, a big butch woman, was still there, and after much grovelling and I got a good telling off, she opened the gate and gave me 3 minutes to get my car out:) That security guard lady has my utmost respect. She opened the barrier to two big lads she didn't know, late at night in Newcastle centre on a Friday night. I suspect the telling off was partly for her entertainment (which is fair enough) and partly to keep us talking long enough to work out whether we were hostile or genuine.
