Hi, my name is Charlie, I have recently decided to start doing some volunteering work at a homeless shelter in North London, taking the job I was under the impression it would just involve cutting the grass and de-weeding.

However, after seeing the garden last weekend, its a much bigger job, in fact its more like a jungle, nothing has been done to it for quite some time, and its quite a large space.

I'd like to get the garden cleaned up ready to plant vegetables, herbs and of course flowers for next spring, but have never really done any garden before, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I am also only able to maintain the garden once a fortnight, and as the shelter has a high turnover, whatever I plant will need to be quiet hardy.

I look forward to meeting you all

    Charlie

Hello Charlie, welcome to the GC forums :sign0016:

Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you; have a read through the Beginners Gardening threads and then Edible Gardening while you wait for someone more experienced than I. I've learned quite a bit just reading over threads there, plus posting pix of parts of my garden, using this sites "search" function has yeilded some great threads full of information.

Finally, good for you for volunteering :dbgrtmb:

:sign0016: Charlie - good advice from Mum - there is lots of interesting info in the threads and the pictures that people have posted certainly help you with your own planning. Obviously your first aim sounds as if you,ve got alot of clearing out to do and you may evn be surprised what you find already planted in the so called jungle. Good luck and enjoy, as that is what gardening should be about!
