Just been out for a walk and popped into the poundshop to see what garden stuff they had.

Picked up 3 bags of tall mixed tulips (20 bulbs in each pack) and 2 packs of purple crocus's (40 bulbs in each pack)

    Grand total of £3.75

Nice one. You won't get any amazing varieties in the Pound Shop, but if you aren't a "tulip snob" and just want some pretty blooms in Spring, it's the place to check out. I've got some great stuff there before and had a fairly high success rate with them...at £1.00 a pack, as opposed to £4.00-5.00 a pack in GCs then you're on to a winner I think :)

the only thing is where to plant them... at home or at the allotment!

I'm gussing because you plant the tulips 15cm down you can still grow lettuce etc on top of the bulbs in the summer?

I've been advised to lift tulips after they've flowered and the foliage starts to die down, as they don't like our damp summers, so I did it this year. I'll plant them all soon, but in pots, as last year I found the dying foliage was getting in the way and using up space I wanted to use for other things. Others wil say they always leave their tulips in situ, year after year.

i always leave tulips in the ground but notice that the next spring there is always less of them
daffs and narcissus seem to multiply
i am forever adding more bulbs each autumn as they put on a lovely bright show in spring, each autumn i seem to dig several holes and accidentally disturb already planted bulbs whilst adding new bulbs to flower the follwing spring

That's the way it is with tulip bulbs i'm afraid!

I usually get them new each season from Lidl, £1.29 for 25, so it does not pay to lift and keep them!

    Cheers!
