It seems like your best option FC, being as Mr. Clutch comes recommended. :)

Free assessment sounds good to me! I had a similar problem once and when asked to get a 2nd opinion I took the car to a garage, paid for the checks and gave the report to the original dealer. They came back and said it wasn't independent enough as I'd paid for it!

I'd have calmly replied along the lines of, 'well I can see we can't reach agreement between us, so if you're sure you're right, then you mind if I submit the details to the small claims court and let them decide, I will of course accept their decision regardless of which way it goes, even if they rule in your favour'.

Had to do that once over a car dispute. The garage initially took the stance, 'right then, do it, see if we care'. They phone back an hour later to tell me they'd had a think and as a gesture of goodwill but not admitting liability, but just because they pride themselves on their good reputation, they'll fix the car for free.

Yep, got the 'OK we'll fix it as a goodwill gesture but it still ain't our fault Guv' bit after a bit more of the merry-go-round. Tedious but the right outcome for me.

I had a google last night, and there is barely a good word about Mr Clutch out there - the theme seems to be that if you go to them with a clutch that isn't knackered, it will be knackered before you leave.

I don't think I am going to have any choice but to pop it into the nearest Audi dealer and pay them the labour to diagnose the problem, and then charge that back to the seller. Before doing so, I will reply to the seller and get them to confirm that the cost of this investigation will only be mine if no fault can be found.

I used Mr Clutch once for a replacement clutch and flywheel skim.

It cost me nearly £300, and that was on a Mark 4/5 escort, one of the most common and cheap to maintain cars around. It was my first car and in my lack of experience I didn't know better. I've since learned that the going rate for that type of job is around £120, to £190 for most average cars, presumably a bit more for the pricier models and higher performance ones.

That seems to be about their level - the Kwik-Fit(up) of the clutch world. I'm disinclined to let them loose on a 14-grand car that I have only done 1000 miles in.

I couldn't fault the quality of work that Mr Clutch did. It took a few hundred miles for the new clutch to settle in but it was sound. Its just that price that was outrageous.

            Update!

I have had my car into the local Audi dealer this morning, and their master technician drove the car, felt the fault (in fact, he noticed that something wasn't quite 'right' before he had even pulled out of the parking space!), and they have advised that a new clutch and flywheel is in order. All I can hope now is that the company I bought from don't let themselves down by getting silly about it.

As you know, I haven't been in the best of health - between that, and Christmas, I haven't had chance to get it looked at before now.

Best of it is, I still haven't covered more than 1500 miles since buying the car, so if nothing else I reckon that the sale of goods act will be on my side.

Can i ask you a question, what foot wear do you wear for driving?
The reason im asking is "not to sort your problem out ref who 's going to fix the clutch & pay for it,
But more of if your driving in high heel boots /shoes etc,
The wrong footwear can cause the clutch to be used in the wrong way and can cause clutch burn, (juddering)
Once this problem is sorted out you dont want it back again and it may be worth asking yourself are you the cause? in the first place.
                Just a thought.

REF advice "dont waste your time with all this forum rubbish,
Go to the trained body that their written advice will stand up in court, this forum jury's thoughts wont stand up in any court and if your going to court and you start saying Oh the forum members said!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they'll laugh you out of the building and you'll look silly.

Im a very keen car owner and only drive the best and if i had any problem with a dealership it would be fully trained mechanics (in my case engineers) report given by them that i'd only be interested in.
This is good sound advice 'take it before its to late'.

And if you continue driving around in an unsafe vehicle and the garage knows this!
Again your shooting yourself in the foot because they will say you've been driving the car for so many weeks (now) months and made it worse.
I know this all sounds very hard to you "but" get your act together before its to late and get two results, (a) the problem sorted (b) drive safe before your involved in an accident due to lack of control of the vehicle.

Now i'll get a load of nasty replies from the forum maffia:oops:
