Sprout leaves and pods

    Evening all.

    I harvest my one and only successful sprout plant at the weekend. We had the sprouts off it today for tea, all fairly standard stuff.

    However, yesterday I pulled the leaves off the loose cabbage type arrangement at the top, washed them, and had them raw in a sarnie (which was delicious by the way). To say it was a bit windy afterwards would be an understatement, but apart from that, nothing bad happened.

    Also, in the 'summer', when most of my sprout plants bolted and produced flowers then seed pods, I ate and enjoyed one of the pods.

    Is it ok to eat these parts at all, and is it ok to eat them raw?

    I seem to remember reading somewhere that there's a chemical in sprouts that makes them very difficult to digest. Was just wondering if there's anything in there that would do harm if eaten in quantity.

    Carry on clue, you obviously dont get white fly, on your plants, otherwise you wouldn't even be thinking of eating those bits.

    If you can stand the gales I'd (or rather you!) go on eating them.
    Some folk can digest things that others can't, but if you can eat and digest then good luck to you and so long as you do it in moderation I doubt if you'll come to any harm.

    I love sprouts and hate them cooked to mush, but a couple of years ago we went to dinner with a friend and were served sprouts that were not even at the al dente stage. Consequences were dire!

        Brussel tops were a very popular veg in the old days and you can still buy them on some market stalls. There's nothing wrong with eating them raw but it's normal to cook them.

        They are much nicer to eat than brussels. :dbgrtmb:
