After coming home this evening, I watered the front garden and then popped to see my neighbours who had managed to get a load of trailing fuchsias and trailing begonias to put in a couple of pouches for their decking; I then sat out in the back garden making the pouches up for them, and when I came indoors, I was met with the sight of a very listless wee dog.

All the windows and doors were open, fan on, and plenty of fresh water was available, however he had obviously over-exerted himself as he was looking pretty rough.

Gambling that my diagnosis would be right, I carried him upstairs, and into the front bedroom, and whacked the air conditioner on. I even did something I never thought I would do, which was to have my dinner in the bedroom whilst keeping an eye on him.

As the temperature slowly dropped, he brightened up and his breathing became less laboured; now, he is all but back to his usual self.

However, I thought it worthy of passing on the tale as a warning to others - pets can VERY quickly be overpowered by the heat, and they don't have to be shut in a car or something for it to happen.

Lets all stay safe during this hot weather - including our beloved pets.

If your dog is panting and hot, do what responsible people do here and put a wet towel over him/her whilst he/she is lying down to cool the body temperature down.

Good tip Victoria - we are lucky enough to have air conditioning, which many people don't have I suppose. The air con, coupled with me sprinkling him with some cool water was enough thankfully.

A very good warning :blue thumb:. Keep an eye on pets and also take care of elderly people nearby.

Good reminder, FC. Glad your wee fella has recovered :dbgrtmb:

I'm considering one of these for Ozzy for his classes because, with his thick, double coat, the heat really does take its toll on him. Interestingly, Ayla also has a double coat, she runs around like a dynamo and doesn't seem to be quite as affected

Victoria - great tip, thank you :blue thumb:

I have found that whilst out walking a couple of evenings last week with Mr Kandy round our village and the heat beating down on me that I was getting breathless and had to stop and rest until the feeling went away, which was after a couple of minutes and by the time we had got home I felt fine.I assumed it was because I had eaten my evening meal and then gone out for walk too soon.

Anyway, whilst talking to a medical friend of mine the other day she said it could have been a sign of dehydration and I told her I try to keep drinking lots of water to help stop that problem.I drank loads more yesterday as I was at the lottie for three hours at tea time, but the only problem was I had to get up twice in the night to spend a penny:snork:

There is a rhumour that we might get up into the 30's today with the weather so am going ot be prepared. It was 81f outside still at 8pm last night and 79f inside so we were glad of having the fan on:snork:

Another tip following on from what Kandy experienced, we never leave the house without a cold bottle of water with us. It is very common to see people here walking about with a bottle of water in their hand. 'Fizzy' is good is you just want a quick quench but 'still' when you want a longer glug! :)

We found a field with one horse & one sheep in it.

Whenever the horse moved the sheep quickly followed. Watched for a while & then realised the horse was providing the only bit of shade in the field & the sheep was using him as a sunshield.

That's sad :( the owners should find a field with some shade in for them!

Last weekend I made myself ill by just not drinking enough. It really is easy to do. Keep your water with you at all times and take to the shade where you can.
I tend to carry a spray of cold water to give the dogs a spritz when we are out but I also always make sure I have some iced water and a bowl for them too.
Keep yourselves and your animals safe. We aren't used to this sort of heat in this country.

My wee Smudge wouldn't wear one - he hates anything like that (not a dress-up kinda guy apparently ); the wee blighter doesn't help himself either - I have just come home, thrown open the French doors to get the air moving, and the first thing he did was to sit on the patio in the full sun, sunbathing!

Dehydration is a major problem not only because of the heat but in general for people as they get older, particularly if they're a bit infirm. They don't want to take in too much liquid because it means they have to get up more frequently to go to the loo. As people get older they find it more difficult to 'hold their water' :old:.

Apart from the obvious effects of dehydration such as dizziness, lack of breathe etc there are the unsuspected effects as well. With older people two of these effects are: more aches in the joints and signs of forgetfulness.

A good way of helping hydration is to start off your morning with lots of warm water (I drink four mugs before breakfast but it's, then, better to leave at least 30 minutes before eating). That also helps your system to get going :heehee:. You still need to drink more during the day but you then don't need to drink so much at night :blue thumb:.

On the plus side, as well, is that being properly hydrated keeps your skin healthier and more elastic.

I always take a bottle of water with me when I go out and not just in hot weather. Obviously, if I'm just going shopping I don't bother but when I go to the bridge club, theatre etc my trusty bottle of water is with me :)

Agree on the skin theory shiney ... that is an important factor here and I am a fanatic about my skin and hair. I actually take a small bottle of water into the bedroom at night ... and we do have ceiling fans (which you need with 5 meter sloped ceilings but the fans are at about 4 meters) and a/c if needed.

We even take water when we are just going shopping and the majors (Continente, Aldi, Lidl) are all within 15 minutes of us ... you just never know what might happen on that short journey ... :dunno:
