I think families adapted the recipe for this to suit their tastes or pockets. I used to love a slice (chunk) of it with a cup of tea once upon a time. :)

From what I remember, and have no measurements as it was using up leftovers ? bread ripped up and soaked in a little milk, dried fruit that had been soaked in tea. candied peel, eggs sugar and suet, mixed spice, mix it all together, if its too wet sprinkle in some flour, pour into roasting tin sprinkle a little sugar on top,and bake for an hour or two, cut into generous squares when cooled a little.

Thanks again, I think I'll have to work through these recipes one by one until I work out which one is nearest my mums. :)

Check this out. In my (replica) 1940 Government Issue recipe book, I found what sounds like a savoury version of bread pudding.

 Saw them make it on the Wartime Farm series.

Disclaimer : Please don't make that bread & then complain that it killed you :)
