    Difficult to tell, but ... I was thinking: a hebe of some kind? :noidea:

    Is it evergreen?

    Looks and sounds like Viburnum tinus. The flowers don't have a particularly pleasant smell, but that only lasts for as long as it's flowering.
    The rest of the time it doesn't smell of anything much at all.

      Yes Trunky you are right, and the smell I've discovered is due to Viburnum beetle defecating on the shrub while they go about their business! Just found that out on the web. Thanks all.
