Have just got my cherry tree but a bit unsure about it. The leader has been cut down so that only two lateral branches exist. The grafting is right below these two branches. The grafting is also quite high (21 inches from soil level) compared to my neighbours cherry tree which is very low down. I believe its a one year ols tree but cant be sure l. Its on gisela root stock. The pruning I was looking at for a one year cherry trees say to cut back leader and leave four lateral branches and no laterals for 18 inches from soil level. Also instructions I see say prune in spring, do I do it straight away?

And is it ok to plant in a pot for this year and next year when we are certain of garden design plant in to the ground?

I want this to be a small (2 meters) tree so need to be sure I dont mess this up.

    Thanks

Hi Mysti77, The graft is a bit higher than usual, but don't worry! When the tree is planted, it would help to knock a tree stake in (before putting the tree in) and then a soft tree tie either side of the graft. You can keep the tree in a pot this year, just make sure it doesn't go short of water.
Best to prune in the summer, during a dry spell. This lessens the chance of rain introducing nasty diseases. Cut the two branches back by two thirds, just above outward-facing buds and it should start to form a lovely, fruit-bearing crown.:)
