Diarmuid Gavin's tip in the paper today , was to spread Vaseline on the stems of your Dahlias to protect from earwigs . Anyone tried this ?
Also he states that earwigs are beneficial to the garden so if you leave damp rolled up newspaper near the Dahlias they will nest in there , and can be relocated away from the dahlias.

I had a tough time with my dahlias and earwigs last year. I tried the bamboo stick and straw method all about the garden and didn't get a single earwig!?
Relocating earwigs away from the dahlias? How do they get to the dahlias in the first place, don't they just relocate from other parts of the garden to the dahlias?

Not really sure Gazania , just relaying a tip from the newspapers . What is the bamboo stick and straw method - sounds like something from 50 shades of grey !

Hi Harry, a bamboo stick, with an upturned pot full of straw on top is placed by the dahlias. In the morning or whenever, the earwigs can be found in there, snug and warm. I've heard lots of people say it has worked for them. I'll try the vaseline method and the paper method. But I'll be relocating them somewhere far away from my garden :):snork:

When I was showing dahlias,I did the bamboo cane trick,it was to put a bamboo can with a hollow top so that the earwigs went into them to sleep, when we found which cans had them in we poured bug killer in as they could ruin a good vase of show dahlias, and ruin a years work.
