sorry to throw this at you. it could be tough to answer.

at a stall in a market, my mum spotted a flower she liked. she asked the florist about it.

the label on the plant was "isla bonita."
the florist added, the plant is also known as "salvia azurea."
at least, that is what mum thinks the florist said.

mum said the flower is blue in colour and tubular in appearance.

unfortunately, that is all i can tell you. i don't have any photos.

i did search for both terms but i simply could not find the flower mum spotted in the shop.
"isla bonita" comes up as a resort! ha ha.

so, anyone here have a clue as to the flower in question?

    thanks in advance.

I believe it is the Tibouchina urvilleana which hails from Brazil and 'isla bonita' would mean 'beautiful island'.

sheal: yup, mum did the same google search. however, she can't find the plant she saw at the stall.

silver surfer: mum says that is the "isla bonita" label she saw. the plant, especially the purple one, could be the one though it is hard to tell from those low-res photos.

victoria: mum looked at the images of "tibouchina urvilleana" on the web. they don't seem to quite match but can't rule it out. need to study it further.

one flower that seems quite near the mark is "salvia guaranitica black and blue".

    thanks for your help.

i suppose mum will have to wait for the weekend to go back to the stall and ask further questions.

Isla Bonita is a commercial name for one of the large Dutch growers if my memory serves me right. I bought a Gloriosa from the bargain bin in one of the sheds last year (two quid) but have no idea which one as it was simply called Gloriosa so the epithet "Salvia azurea" may just have been used to give a blue Salvia a posh name. Especially as your Mum thinks Black and Blue is the best match. If it doesn't have dark stems there are quite a few other S.gaurantica cultivars to choose from.
