    Uhd 4k TV's!!! I want one :)
    They cost thousands though
It's like the tv is a window to the outside. Picture is amazing, and because of the Uhd (ultra high definition), you can view the screen from really close up and it doesn't seem to affect your eyes.
I was just looking at a couple in Currys. They showed some street scenes, and it actually felt like you were there! Love em :blue thumb:

All valid points :) but it makes no difference because I won't be able to afford one until the price eventually drops 'right' down
It will be interesting to see broadcasters input :)

To be fair, the prices have already begun dropping - you can get a UHD TV for less than £2k now; still a hell of a lot of money, granted, but not all that much for the technology really.

I rarely buy brand new technology. I wait for the inevitable price drop, and as you say, it's already happening. If I had a spare 2k :heehee: , I would be very tempted though :)
But........ As @JazzSi points out, the content needs to be there.

The manufacturers are well aware in situations like these that its very much a chicken and egg situation - they are not going to get consumers to buy the new TV if they can't get the benefit of the new technology, and they are not going to get broadcasters to buy the relevant broadcasting equipment or to support the new technology if no customers are buying the TV's. For this reason, they have developed some fairly clever technology that upscales the existing 1080 image up to 4k (basically, its a chip that looks at line 1 and then line 2 of the image and then makes up three lines based on the average values of each pixel in the line above and the line below - - there is more to it than that obviously, but that is the nuts and bolts of the process); what this means for you and I is that we can buy a new TV and it will work its magic on your existing HD signal so you get near as dammit the full 4k picture until such times as enough people buy the TV's to persuade the broadcasters to be catching up.

The manufacturers must be crying in their beer though - they were clearly relying on the World Cup giving a huge push in the volume of these sets (which I suspect are currently being sold at a loss) to push the market forward into the realms of profit.

I read that sky will be releasing a 4k UHD box in the near future.
IMHO it will be a long time before any broadcasters will use the technology yet though.

Will that support 8k?? I believe the technology is already out there, or at least 'being developed'. :)

All this 4k and 8k stuff is great in the studio where everything is wired via SDI.
However, at home, everything is wired up via HDMI (due to DRM issues, SDI is not permitted for home use) and since 4k takes roughly the same bandwidth as 4 X HD signals, I'm willing to bet that 99% of people's HDMI cables and the whole chain in fact will not support the higher data rates required for 4k.
Over and above this, upgrading to 4k is very costly for production houses, studios and broadcasters so don't expect to see much soon.

Actually it's a bit of a double whammy for broadcasters as they transmit channels in groups or streams and the higher the resolution of each channel, the less number of channels they can cram into each stream and thus either have to lease yet more space on the satellite for extra transponders (read more money) or drop other channels to compensate.

Now another "little" technical hiccup that the promotional blurb "forgets" to mention is the fact that in a perfect environment, things like transmission loss, conversion phase noise and bit error rates don't count, but in the real world, they become more critical as bandwidth and symbol rates increase and in a situation like DVB (T or S), these all come into play and one will experience more "drop outs" in say 4k than HD.
