    But it ain't!
Got this message saying that Back Up is in progress, but it is not supposed to be.
    How do I stop it?

From a non-techie: I would double click on the message. This is likely to bring the programme up and you can adjust the settings. Otherwise, if you remember the name of the software you should be able to find it and adjust it.

Had you originally set the back-up to occur at certain times? I have mine set to do two back-ups per day (two different programmes). One does a back-up of the data and the other does a mirror image of the computer. They go to different hard drives. Probably overkill - but I don't mind.

Occasionally they don't do it quite the way they're supposed to and I have to reset them. e.g. the one that does the mirror image is supposed to erase the previous image once it has done a new one. That, sometimes doesn't happen and it just keeps making new images without erasing - which will fill the drive up pretty quickly if I leave it. So I manually erase the old ones and reset the parameters on the software.

I haven't the faintest why it stops doing what it's told but don't really bother myself about it. I just override it and start again.

Got rid of the message somehow, but now it tells me that the Backup was cancelled, even though the listing on the External drive shows that it is there. Weird!
I Back up to an external drive every week as it take so long to do it daily.

My data backup doesn't take long but the mirror image does. So the mirror backup is done at 3 a.m.

Our computer is very firmly switched off at bed time and the plug removed!
Back to the original problem. The scheduled Back up was set for Sunday and according to the date on the Drive that is when it was done, so why is it still showing me that it is trying to back up now? and more importantly how do I stop it trying? Even if I connect the External Drive, it does not Back up, it just shows that it is doing it,but it is NOT!
I have tried Clicking on it, changing the Schedule, everything I can think of, but nothing stops it.

    @Palustris

You didn't mention what drive it is and what O.S. you are running.
A lot of new drives come with very irritating software that tries to do all sorts of things (backups included) for you and just land up getting in the way.

Next time it happens, press the CONTROL+ALT+DELETE keys simultaneously then click on
"Start Task Manager" then select the "Processes" tab and at the bottom make sure you click on the "show processes from all users".

This will bring up a list of all the programs that are running.
Try and see if you spot one that matches the manufacturer and/or model of your external drive and please report back.

If nothing is listed, not to worry, it could be that it's running as a "service" in which case I can explain how to look at, start or stop any services.

The problem was that it was NOT running either to an internal drive or an external one. The machine has two drives fitted and backup is normally from the main drive to the other. I also backup to an external drive which at the time was not connected.
There was nothing shown on Task Manager either in Processes or Services.
All that was happening was that it was shown as running in the Action Center(sic) notification area.
I have a horrible feeling that the machine is having problems. Got a message when we switched off last night that the Catalyst program had stopped working(whatever that is).
We also keep losing Firefox and then have to do a Restart to get it back.
New machine so it can go back to the maker.
    Windows 7 by the way.

    Very strange.
Have a look at the logs (under admin services).
