One of the ships turned fire hoses on them before pulling up the ramps.

Just a thought I think while we are in the EU why can't we standardise a benefit system across Europe with all economic migrants and asylum seekers receiving benefits from a Central European fund, until accepted as a citizen in a country of settlement or returned to homeland.
Given that Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Estonia and others have a much reduced or compatible unemployment rate as here it would paint a more realistic picture of building a new life in Europe/UK
It would also spread the burden of supporting migrants across the whole community.
I have nothing against anyone trying to get a better life for themselves or their families and all countries benefit from a racial mix.

I'm not sure all countries actually benefit from a racial mix?
I am sure however it does create racial tensions amongst the poorer areas, that cannot be denied.

Also that kind of thinking allows pretty much the whole of Africa and the rest of the third world "open season" on crashing our borders and coming to live here.
Which is basically what is happening.

There are only certain kinds of people that get "benefits"

Edit, that is not aimed at anyone who might be in serious need, just those that "play" the system.

Breaking News! The UK has offered the 12 miles of 9 foot high steel security fencing used at the Nato Conference in Wales to Calais to make their port more secure.

I understand your argument Pete but we have the whole of Europe and wider world fire fighting the problems of immigration with each country working more or less on its own.
I am simply saying given the state we are in all in here in Europe we should join together to standardise the benefit system and access to healthcare for new migrants and asylum seekers. Therefore whichever country is the point of entry the immigrant will be treated the same.
This way no one country will be seen as the land of milk and honey.
We can also work together on a tighter European border policy then too.
While we are in standardisation mode we could also tweet the system so that you have to work X number of years long in whichever European country, even after qualifying as a citizen before you trigger the welfare of the given country.
This will hopefully dilute the problems of folk coming from other continents, whilst we all get to grips with the population shifts of being in Europe.
As a rider I think that as a European, you work in another member state and require welfare of any kind this should be paid for and facilitated by the country of origin not the host country. So if you as a UK citizen. are out of work in France your benefit would be paid via the UK Embassy and outposts over there. So you can cross borders to work but not to live off any other European country. Bonus is loads if new admin jobs!
I live and work in a multi cultural area and whilst I agree there are tensions now and again, mostly folk manage to live peaceably and I do believe that we have learnt from others settling in our community. I am grateful to the folk who saved my dad's life and treated him with dignity and respect. Mostly they were not British born.
On a day to day basis our family is shown friendliness and kindness from many folk who have made their way here, from other countries.
I think the great thing about our country is our acceptance, look at the lads that went out on jihad from Britain and now want to come home. These lads (treasonous as they may be) have been exposed to tolerance and fairness and now cannot reconcile this background with the situation they are now in. This is a strong message to others that may want to follow them.
I think this is how we win by leading and setting the example, though we do need to sort the economics out.

Adendoll, I agree with you up to a point, but reality is that Europe will never sort out that kind of thing , hoovers they can do, but anything regarding migrants/immigrants they dont really want to know.

Regarding the benefit system, the bunch that are at Calais are non EU, so should not be entitled to any benefits anyway, but they are once they enter the UK.
Which is why they want to come here.
For a better life, as you put it.

I do agree Britain is probably the most tolerant country in the world, but that's what got us into this mess in the first place.

As for the Jihad bunch, they certainly wouldn't get back in the country again, if I had my way we would have our own version of Guantanamo Bay waiting for them.

There is another of my bugbears in there Pete most of us see The European Parliament as a joke and barely know who represents us. Therefore they get away with dictating to us rather than working for us!
I think we will have to agree to differ on the immigration question.
Good to debate with you and exercise the grey cells!

If there's a independent Scotland with the greatly increased benefits that have been promised, unless they're permitted to remain outside the Schengen Area all of these immigrants will be heading for Scotland.

You cannot be serious! The NHS is totally reliant on huge numbers of highly able staff from non-native family backgrounds, the area I live in is full of hard- working, educationally motivated families of Asian origin whose solid values are shoring up British society far more than many of our homegrown useless scallies. With a handful of exceptions the immigrants of today are grateful, able, keen and will be the success stories of tomorrow. Yes, they might change society but also can strengthen and invigorate it.
I advocate a closely-controlled but generous immigration policy for that reason and more pressure on natives to contribute to society in return for benefits.

The issue at stake is the Schengen Agreement which has allowed there to be "no" borders between EU states, but it also requires that at borders with non-EU states that country deals with any asylum seekers - i.e. they, and any illegals, should be dealt with in the country of first point of entry, and borders should be patrolled and illegal entry made difficult/impossible. The benefit of that is that thereafter you can have free transition between states as everyone "inside" is valid, which helps movement of good and so on.

We, being an island, have a much easier job of policing our shores ...

... this isn't France's problem either as I doubt any of these illegals made France their entry-point into the EU. Its probably Greece's problem, and there is no hope of solving it there given the state of their economy at present, and if we gave them more money to help solve the problem would it reach the right departments for that to actually happen?

We could help France by adopting a policy more inline with the rest of the EU so that we were no more attractive as a final destination than any other EU state. We might have to stop speaking English too ... perhaps the Scots are on to something with their referendum?, and plans for a new foreign language to boot :heehee:
