    Good evening Northants, please feel free to work your magic. I tweeked it using Canon editing software although I have Photoshop installed in another computer which I only use to process raw files.

    How do I send pic to you? There used to be a personal message option on this site but can't see it anywhere.

      Hi pip. Love the photo, if it was mine I would go back to the darker version and just fill in the left side (so it is all dark, Some times large contrasts work so well in a Photo).......and maybe a little work on the eyes to make them shine.

      Wanted to share a pic of a Melon Barb in my home aquarium. I just edited for brightness adjustment, these fish are really colourful.

      Canon eos1000d, 18-55 lens, no external flash :)

      Cheers,

      Karthik

        I used to be really into it back in the days of film but I've no real mojo with digital. I always shoot in manual still though.

        I'm reasonably pleased with this though....................
        [IMG]

        No editing beyond a crop, the basic settings were;
        • Flash mode with a white balance of +1 (lessens the reds which my old Nikon D40 seems a little too keen on)
        • ISO 200
        • Shutter speed 1/500
        • F10
        • Flash compensation -1
        • Image optimisation set to vivid (one of the best tools I find for correcting shade accuracy)
        The subject is set in space which in this case was a room in daylight. I use this technique a lot for these portrait style shots and it works well where natural light levels (to the digital eye of the camera) are low. Camera was rotated to reduce shadows from the on camera flash.

        Faults;
        • The background can be made out if you look hard enough.
        • Slight flash glare on the stem and a couple of other spots.
        • Minor shadows.
        Proper editing would no doubt sort those out?

        Pleased with the colour accuracy and capturing the textures so well (IMO) on what was just a quick snap at the first attempt.

        Full exif info is on this page.

          I don't know much about close up stuff, but yes, many of these could be sorted in editing software.
          Blown out areas can be very difficult, and in some cases impossible to correct, but I can still see some detail there, so you would probably be ok :blue thumb:
          Nicely lit from front to rear, and top to bottom. :blue thumb:

          Very interesting longk, I always thought you waited till the middle of the night to take your photos :)

          I can't see anything in the background.

          I might have a crack at copying your settings :blue thumb:

              I've got a couple, a Pentax DSLR which should be easy to achieve your settings. But I hardly ever use the Pentax since buying a compact Olympus ZX-10 earlier this year. I've found I can usually get better results with the cheap little Olympus, so it will be fun seeing if I can match your settings. It's only got a tiny inbuilt flash and that might let me down.

                  Hard to say without knowing what camera and seeing some EXIF info.
                  A moving white subject against a dark background will be challenging. If the camera was on manual raise the ISO considerably. Also a lower F figure would help as the background is largely irrelevant (actually more blurred would give a more dramatic sense of movement). If it was on auto I would look at the metering settings - the subject is in focus but overexposed.

                  I doubt it (although I have no experience) as the subject is so overexposed that I question whether there is anything usable there.

                    I think @longk has raised some valid points. As I said in an earlier post, if the subject is over exposed, you are a bit up the creak without a paddle. Thats why wedding photographers tend to under-expose a white wedding dress, and then correct the exposure during editing. A good sharp subject though, again as @longk has mentioned. I haven't done much panning myself, but I would imagine it takes practice, and maybe a touch of luck. I expect a master would disagree with that last bit :heehee:
                    I can't help thinking that your shutter speed may be a tad fast. You need some advice from @Cjt2014 :)
