Looks like were a victim of our own success. We the UK bites the bullet with cuts and cuts, individuals suffer no pay-rises and real-term pay reductions and as a result the UK grows. The thing that gets me though is France refuses to do any of that and tries to keep spending and their economy shrinks. And now we get a massive bill while they get a rebate of over £800m?
How can anyone support Europe as an idea following that?

Looks like a right kick where it hurts for Cameron.
You cant negotiate with that bunch, rules is rules.
We just dont fit in with the way the rest of Europe thinks, never have and never will.

It tends to make me think the the EU actually want us to leave.
      So maybe we should?

It is outrageous. I was never a fan of the EU to start with but recently had found myself getting used to the idea, then they drop that on us.

It just proves how out of touch they are. UKIP shoots up through the ranks, cons tell them that the British people have had enough and we have to renegotiate or else, and yet they still do this. Still, there's a general election next year. Maybe this will be enough to make people actually think about who they will vote for, rather than either not bothering, or just doing what they've always done.

Just read this bit in the Guardian,
"Eurostat arrived at the €2.1bn figure on the basis of new methods of calculating member states’ GNI since 1995, taking account of previously unreported or under-reported black economy elements, such as drug dealing and consumption or the sex industry."

Seems its back pay we owe them due to criminal activity.:snork:

They really are a bunch of loonies over there.

I noticed that Mr Cameron said "We won't pay the Bill on the 1 December", what he didn't say was "That we won't pay the Bill".

I wouldn't mind so much, but a large part of the drugs industry and prostitution over here comes from over there.
But if we try to send it back they say we are interfering with the free movement of people within the EU.

As I said, a complete bunch of loonies.

Any other EU country been informed of a similar debt due for repayment on December 1st?

I just can't get my head around the idea of a modern society factoring in drugs and prostitution when calculating how much a country has actually earned. The only comparable situation I can think of comes from a collection of works of satirical comedy fiction, the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, with his various guilds (guild of thieves, guild of assassins, guild of seamstresses (which is not full of seamstresses) etc. The current EU top man is leaving next month we are told. I wonder if his replacement will be called something like Havelock Vetinari.

As mowgley said earlier, Netherlands owes a few hundred million also, but not on the same scale as us.

Thank you Pete. Has the Government only just been told about this payment of debt? Surely it wasn't a complete surprise - was it?
I know they are saying it was in the small print of the contract you originally signed up to...
but I think they are miffed because there have been mutterings about us possibly seeking a get out clause,

I think it's now time to bail out of the EU.

£1.7bn would go a long way to plugging the gap in the NHS's budget.
