Do you mean a the likes of a Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ3EB-K http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00BET0V...lid=1CVRB2TYJJZQW&coliid=I3M7PCNV7HV65O&psc=1 although I suspect it isn't as I don't think you can get filters for it

Or have you got yourself something like a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 (which can take filters) http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicdmclx3

Or is it a Panasonic micro 4/3 camera (AKA compact camera system) with interchangeable lenses? such as (but there's lots of models) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-16-1MP-Compact-System-Camera/dp/B004ZKHAWM looking something like this

If you have the box, instructions, etc., anything will help identify the model, even what's on the front of the lens

Hi Nick, just seen this thread so sorry for the delay. As Scrungee says make sure which camera it is and we'll all put in some help and advice.

Here's a bit about a polarising filter, although I have to say they are not a vital thing to have at the beginning. Some might disagree but I would get a UV filter which, when screwed onto the lens, will protect it.

Polarising filters change the way that your camera sees and treats light. Particularly – when using one you’ll notice a change in how your camera sees reflections and glare. As a result it also has the ability to change the vibrancy of some colors in shots.

Let’s look at a few areas where polarising filters can have have the biggest impact:

      • Water – When shooting a picture of water adjusting your polarising filter will mean you see into the water differently, cutting out glare and even changing the colour of the water. For example when I was snorkelling off a boat off the coast of Indonesia a few years ago I took a series of photos (on my film camera) using a polarising filter that made the water look crystal clear and a bright blue color. Without the filter the shots had nowhere near the same impact with a big reflection being picked up off the top of the water and a more murky color.
      • Sky – Similarly, the color of sky can change remarkably using a polarising filter. Rotating the filter you’ll see a blue sky change from a light pale blue color to a vibrant and deep blue color (depending upon where the sun is). A polarising filter can cut out a lot of the smoggy haze that is often in city shots.
      • Color – Polarizing filters cut down the reflection that many objects have (even those that you might not think reflect at all). This makes the colors of some of these objects more vibrant. For example out in the garden you might notice foliage on trees looking greener than you would get without the filter.
      • Other Reflections – Shooting through glass can be a real challenge at times and using a polarising filter can definitely assist in cutting down distracting reflections or glare. Similarly photographing shiny objects (like a new car for instance) with a polarising filter will change the way reflections are treated.
One thing though, Nick, having a "all singing, all dancing" camera does not mean a great pic as it's down to the photographer. I said to you that you have the eye to see and create things and the last thing you are is stupid, believe me. I only wish I had your talent, but I kind of think photography is something you will like as you will be using that creative eye of yours:snork:

Hi Nick. You'll be fine with a LUMIX. I have a basic one and get some good piccies sometimes.
As Armandii says, you've got the gift of seeing things that others don't see.
Roll on - by the weekend, you'll be downloading piccies for us.
Now, I can recommend "Dropbox" for storing piccies in. They are easy to put up on GC from Dropbox which is free,
        Jenny

If it's the last type, a micro 4/3 compact camera system, I have 2 such cameras and a variety of lenses.

Are you having trouble posting using a tablet? I have a couple and find posting pics can be a bit fiddly
