I've decided to grow onions from seed instead of sets, when is the best time for sowing and is greenhouse sown any advantage over direct bed sowing? does the variety matter? Mine are Centurion. Veg aren't my strong(y) point.

      Hiya Strongy :blue thumb:
I always sowed mine early March(ish), in the greenhouse with a little heat at night (they don't like it too warm mind). I would definitely think that direct sowing would lead to a crop of smaller onions. As for variety, you pays your money...
TBH, I got on ok with all the varieties I tried :dbgrtmb:

Just sown mine in the greenhouse, slightly earlier than I usually do.
I tend to use those divided trays, and sow a few seeds in each section.

I then plant out in early April weather permitting.

Red Baron and Kappa for me.

Just sown mine on the kitchen windowsill, Bedfordshire Champion, they need plenty of light once germinated so will go out to the greenhouse and kept cool.

I had the same problem back in 2013. I ended up making 3 sowings, although my second sowing surprised me by germinating after I thought all was lost with them.

Warm to germinate, then cooler conditions with as much light as poss :)

Got my bedfordshire ones out of the propogator now, just in the unheated greenhouse.

It seems I'm a bit behind on the Onion seed sowing, can you really do it this early on just a windowsill?

You're only a bit late if you want whoppers. If you want 'regular' size, plenty of time yet :blue thumb:
