Hi guys, just recently joined the forum to expand my knowledge and seek expert advice.

I have a small garden with a few plan and wanted some very very fragrant plants in the garden. I would appreciate members input on what they think is the best fragrent plant to grow.

I have purchased 3 'Nicotian Sylvestris' as they are suposed to be hardy and have a nice fragrent. Last year I had the Cestrum Nocturnum (Queen of the Night) in our green house kind of extention room LOL and its fragrance filled half the house , unfortunatly it did not last the spring. So I have two on order.

My need to buy list is as follows:

    x2 Sarcococca
    x1 Cestrum Diurnum
x1 Ylang Ylang (for the large living room, wich is always warm)

However I could do with someones advice on the following plants.

I wanted a Burgmansia, and from the searches I have done, the most cented is supose to be, 'Dr. Seuss' and 'Charles Grimaldi', however I can't find them anywehere (It was a american forum)

Aswell as a Gardenia, which is the most fragrant?

I am also looking for a few scented roses, the names of which I will post when I get home but I remember two which were on the american forum and would like to know if they can be bought in this country: Rose - Secret Garden Musk, & Rose - Barcelona (Francis Dubreuil)

    Thanks in advance guys.

 Hmmm.. Well first off I think Gardenias are more fragrant... Daturas, for Brugmansias ( have a look at T&M)
Lilies, Cottage Pinks, Dianthus, Sweet Williams, Wallflowers (Erysium), Lavender of course. Pertunias. Phlox, Sweetpeas..... Honeysuckle or Jasmin as climbers..:dh: Can't think of any more at the moment, either I have or my daughter have these..:)

A Datura ... is it the same as a Brugmansias(Angels trumpet)? and which i the most fragrant between them? have you herd of 'Dr. Seuss' and 'Charles Grimaldi'?

    Hi wagas and welcome.
I would imagine that you want to have scented plants as much of the year as possible, so here are some of my favourites. All are outdoor plants.

    Winter

    Lonicera Fragrantissima (scented shrubby honeysuckle)
    Daphne Odora (late winter)
    Chimonanthus praecox (Wintersweet)
    Hamamelis (the witch hazels)
    Viburnum bodnantense "Dawn"

    Spring

Daffodils, there a a lot of scented ones
    Hyacinths
    Siberian wallfowers
    Clematis armandii
    Lunaria rediviva
    Choisya Ternata

    Summer

    Roses
    Philadelphus
    Hesperis matronalis
    Syringa vulgaris 'Mme Lemoine'
    Jasminum Officinale
    Lilium Regale
    Night Scented Stock
    Nicotiana
    Evening Primrose

    Autumn

    Cercidophyllum japonicum,
    Elaeagnus x Ebbingei,
    Myrtus Communis,
    Clematis Flammula.

There are lots of others I'm sure. Good luck

Waqas, Datura are very similar to Brugmansias.. The difference being the trumpets on Brugmanias hang down & on Daturas they look up..!! I am not sure why, but I cannot grow a Brug', but I can a Datura this is mine & the smell is lovely.. Waqas Walnut is the Brugmansia man on here.. He can fill you in all about them...:thmb:

I will try a Brugmania but is their a site which lists them by their fragrance. I would realy like to get Dr. Seuss' and 'Charles Grimaldi' but dont think you can get them in this country so their equilent will do.

If you want a plant with a very heavy scent then it has to be Polianthes tuberosa.. My friend has some & they are always a talking point.. !
It may be too late for this year but T&M list them here

There is also someone on Ebay as well, but not sure of that..

    Thanks for the pm, replied.

Just got some lillies today and went into the garden, the jasmine has its flowers out, smells lovely but you have to be quit close.

the Nicotian Sylvestris and Cestrum plants also arrived today, though the Nicotian leaves did not smell nice at all lol.

Shame you don't like honeysuckle. Our neighbour has some growing over a pagoda and the smell wafting over the hedge in the evenings is divine.

I don't seem to be able to grow it though :(

lol, I have tried them but dont raly like the flowers and the ones iv tried are never that fragrant as people say so gave up on them.

However I am thinking of getting a Magnolia Alba, but not sure which one of the following:

    Magnolia x Soulangeance Lennei Alba;
Magnolia x Soulangeance Alba Superba; or
    Magnolia Campbellii Alba

How about Magnolia Denudata, which is white and scented, or M. denduata 'Fragrant Cloud' which is a smaller tree but with rose pink flowers?
