If you're around the Cotswolds, it's worth heading just a little further south to the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley area. Chepstow castle and Tintern Abbey are both well worth a look and for spectacular views, Symonds Yat on the River Wye near Monmouth takes some beating.

As you head north from there, Great Malvern is a pleasant little town and the nearby Malvern Hills offer some great views across the surrounding countryside.

Thank you to everyone for the suggestions. Tintern Abbey was a place that I was trying to remember :blue thumb:. It looks amazing :).
I know a week doesn't sound long, but I am like Tigger......I have a spring up my wotsit, and never stay in one place for long. Especially as I am likely to be travelling alone.
I am hoping to go in either Spring (May), or early summer when the weather might be good.
My ex wife lived in N.Wales, so I know that area fairly well. It looks like it could be The Cotswolds, Tintern Abbey, then through to Portmeirion, along the North coast of wales, and then ........ Peak district ?? and back down via The Cake District? (Bakewell).
I want to go to The Lake District in October (autumn colours), so I may leave that out for now.
As for Northumberland.....I bet its brilliant for castles, and alike. Maybe I could cut across from the lakes in October.

Llanthony Abbey http://www.castlewales.com/llantho.html is 30 miles from Tintern on a direct route to Portmerion. There is a hotel built into the ruins that has a public bar (in the old 13th century crypts) with good beers and in fine weather you can drink your pint outside amongst the ruins.

Very different to me then. The six weeks I spent in Malaysia was a flying visit by my standards!

The only way to travel :blue thumb:

I agree @longk :blue thumb:. I did mention my trip to some ex girlfriends of the last 12 months, and about 70% of them wanted to come along too, but hiring a 12 seater mini bus will just add cost .

Pembrokeshire is stunningly beautiful and the coastal views are just breathtaking. Well worth a detour through the Gower Peninsula on your way.
