Tree Identification

I've no idea what type of tree the following is, could someone put me out of my misery please

It's possibly a Syringa (Lilac).

 

Someone else said Lilac tree to me when they visited the house but I didn't consider it as I've never seen it flower purple (or any flowering at all) in the last year and a half. It just seems to grow green leaves and that's it

 

To be honest when i saw the leaves i thought lilac but didnt post because i thought it would be wrong

 

Leaf growth does seem to be uneven, has it been fed at all?

 

You are right, it's very patchy growth. I had just put that down to it growing based on the light it was getting. I haven't given the tree anything in the last year and a half. It certainly doesn't look like it's going to bloom in the next month or so when it's due I think? Now that I know it's a tree that requires care, what kind of care would you recommend? A special feed?

 

It may be a Syringa. We lived in a house for 6 years and I always wanted one but my OH didn't like them because "they're only interesting for a month every year". After we moved a beautiful one appeared in our old hedge; lovely flowers every year. I stopped one day and commented to the new owners about it and they said "We didn't plant it, we haven't cut the hedge since you left", it seems we were cutting it back without recognising it!

 

Have you checked to see if there are dead branches......scratch the surface with a finger nail and it should be green underneath, or prune a little off the tip of a branch. You could try feeding it twice a year with either blood, fish and bone or chicken manure pellets. Drop this around the base and water in.

I will point out though that it's unusual to see this lack of leaf growth, do you know how old it is?

 

I only purchased the house in the last year or more and this tree was already in the garden so I have no idea of it's age. Thank your for your follow ups
