    Hi,
I have been browsing this forum with interest so I thought I might as well dip my toe in the water. I am a long time gardener of sorts. I had an allotment a few years ago but work pressure meant I was rarely there so I gave it up. Things are a bit easier now so two years ago my daughter and myself managed to drop lucky (long waiting list round here) and got the chance to rent one. The site had flooded the winter before and all the tenants had drifted off- not literally of course! That winter was very, very wet and I thought it was worth risking as I could not recall floods there before. We have now taken on another plot and we are still the only tenants. A shame the others have become overgrown but the solitude is wonderful. I suspect many people like the idea of an allotment but when they see the docks, brambles and nettles they think again. However I have seen there are people on this forum who are not daunted by a few weeds.
It has been hard work clearing the ground, and we are not finished yet, but we had some successes last year and things are looking good this year, although April was very dry as you know and the soil has been slow to warm - the nights have stayed cold round here. Anyway enough from me, good luck to you all- we have the best hobby in the world-but you already know that!
    Regards
    Tony.

Thanks Armandii. See you have a Lightning as your avatar. Saw one last week at the museum at RAF Cosford. Great place to visit.

Yep, served with No.111 Squadron as they were changing over from Black Hawker Hunters to Lightnings and were known as the Black Arrows Aerobatic Team. They worked out all the aerobatic manoeuvres that set the stage for the Red Arrows.:snork:

Interesting that. Would that team have displayed at Farnborough about 1964 or so? One strong memory from my childhood is being taken there by my eldest brother and there being numbers of Lightnings there. Scared me to death!

More than likely as we did all of the Air Shows including those abroad. No.111 Squadron holds the record to the largest number of aircraft [22] to loop in formation.

The Black Arrows, one of the predecessors of the currentRoyal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, were anaerobatic demonstration team formed in 1956 by Squadron Leader Roger L.Topp, then Commanding Officer 111 Squadron (treble-one). One of the many memorable feats accomplished by the Black Arrows was the execution of aWorld record loop 22 Hawker Hunter formation in 1958 at theSociety of British Aircraft Constructors' show at Farnborough[1] This was a world record for the greatest number of aircraft looped in formation, and remains unbroken to this day. After the loop the Black Arrows performed the world's first 16 aircraft barrel roll. Roger Topp handed over the lead of the Black Arrows to Squadron Leader Peter Latham in late 1958. Latham expanded the size of the team to 9 aircraft and lead the Squadron for two years.

I was posted there straight out of Apprenticeship as a Radar Fitter and was the "Baby" of the Squadron due to my lying about my age to get into the rif raf as soon as I could so I was just 17 and a bit!! The Lightning was pure magic, famous for it's ability to climb nearly vertical as it reached take off speed and then go supersonic in the climb.

              Welcome to GC!

I find it amazing to think that you are still alone at the allotments. I wonder when the masses will start "drifting" back? Solitude is great, but the downside is you are surrounded by ever-growing weed-banks....
