Just to throw my twopence into the ring you would expect it to have berries if it were a shrubby Lonicera.

There doesn't always have to be berries Kevin, which is why I've asked Silver Surfer our wonderful plant expert what she thinks in my post #29. :) There may also be a growing problem with the plant that has prevented it producing berries, perhaps soil condition, lack of nutrients etc.

          Thanks for incredible compliment!

Sorry Sheal...didn't mean to ignore your question
          Answer is... I didn't know!
          But have researched it and...
Symphoricarpos is considered to have perfect flowers and is therefore monoecious..
ie...One flower has both the male and female working "bit"...so should produce berries.

I am still waiting a good close up of the flowers.

Thanks Silver Surfer, I didn't think you were ignoring my question, I was just waiting on your reply as it's probably a busy time for you at the moment. :) So if we have got the plant right, there is another reason for it not having berries. Perhaps a good pruning would stimulate it?

If this is a symphiocarpus pruning would not help this year as it flowers on the previous years wood.
