Several months ago, on a whim, I planted a piece of ginger that we purchased in the supermarket, just to see what, if anything, it would do. Well, it did absolutely nothing at all, so I got tired of waiting and was set to toss it out. When I dumped the soil from the pot, lo and behold the ginger had begun to root. And, the piece of ginger was considerably larger than it was when I first planted it. It is now replanted in a much larger pot and happily growing in the greenhouse. It should prove interesting.

I grow a few different types of ornamental gingers (Hedychium etc) and they do take a while to get going.
Especially after being out of the ground for some time, it can take a while to break dormancy.

That is good to know, as I also planted a piece of yellow ginger and tumeric at the same time. Neither of them have shown any signs of growth.
