Solved 2 flying buzzing things in my greenhouse

Not sure what these are. Not really buzzing but look kinda problematic. Suspect pest but i have never seen one before. It almost looks like a large wasp except that it is black but for red legs. Its also kinda long and narrow with a pointed tail at the end which makes me wonder if it has a sting? Its just under an inch long i would say and there are 2 of them in there (at least). Any ideas?

On an up note though I got a little frog jumped up whilst i was watering my tomatoes in there which was a nice surprise

I can't see much from your pics, but I had these at my mums once. I think the tail drills into the wood, and if I recall correctly, implants its eggs??? (not totally sure).
They were black, with quite bright red legs if my memory serves me right (long time ago now). If you google, scroll through the images, as there are clearly many types.

 

Hmmm....looking at pics of woodwasps its possible Only thing is they are both completely black but for red legs. They are a bit like this one at http://www.snipview.com/q/Sirex_cyaneus except darker red legs. I don't see any orange that is typical of wasps. The one on the webpage seems to say its native to forrest of Alberta but not many forrest or even signifiant number of trees around here. None at all in my garden.

 

Yes definitely bright red legs. There is no wood in my greenhouse so i guess its ok in there LOL Are they pests?

 

Yeah, the ones at mum's were totally black apart from the red legs too.

I think you are probably right then i saw a you tube video that says they don't sting so thats a good plus. I have jerusalem artichokes at bottom of garden that seem to attract parasitic wasps and aphids so maybe they are there for that?

 

Maybe. It makes you wonder how they get your address.
I have lilly beetles that have arrived from somewhere.

 

LOL i always have confidence that if its in any way bad it will find me LOL

Not that I can see. But I think Northants got it right to be honest with wood wasp slowly I'm learning what all these little critters are LOL ;-)
