    Hi all,
    just introducing myself.

I set this account for my partner and myself to use. She's into growing flowers and shrubs while I prefer to attempt to grow veg. Our garden faces south and north. Has mainly clay soil, the giveaway is the main road near us is called Clay Hill. I mainly grow my veg in containers, I also have one 2 metre trough, as I need the height the containers give as I'm a wheelchair user.

I like growing garlic, potatoes, peas, chillies and onions. I started by putting a few supermarket bought garlic cloves amongst my partners flowers and I had a fair crop. The next year I got a couple of potatoes sacks and put in some more garlic. Again I got a fair crop but this year the crop for virtually everything has been terrible so I thought I need help.

Anyhoo, I'll leave it at that and I hope to get to know you all.

    Neil H.

      Welcome to Gardeners Corner :sign0016:

It not been a brilliant year for most of us, constant wind and cool weather has held things back, i've just got some debris netting to put along the fence to slow the wind next year.

Welcome to GC Neil. :) If it's the Clay Hill I know then it's not to far from where I was born.

It sounds like you and your other half have got a good combination going in the garden, perhaps we will see some pictures at a later point. :)

Hi Neil a very warm :sign0016: from me too.
I love the sound of your garden, plenty of plants & veg just how a garden should be if you ask me :dbgrtmb:.
It's beena very difficult year due to the weather, I'm sure it's nothing to do with what you have done personally, my runners & French beans were the worst they've ever been, but there's always next year for a better crop if you ask me!
I shall look forward to getting to know you both on the forum :dbgrtmb:

Thanks for all your replies. Glad to hear I'm not quite as bad a gardener as I thought

If you were born near Enfield then you'll know what I mean. We had to raise the level of the garden and put in a load of land drains because the ground water level is so high. The lawn was like a bog and after rain I would sink into it. When it rains the estate gets water springing out from peoples' driveways and paths for days after.

I'll post some photos when there's something to look at. I've just planted a load of over winter onions in the trough as well as cabbages, broccoli and curly kale. Here's hoping things go well. Oh, and I took advantage of an offer in a gardening magazine to buy some decent garlic instead of using supermarket cloves so hopefully next years crop will be a bumper one.

Now this is really weird Neil! :doh:The Clay Hill I'm thinking of is in Essex but my husband knows your Clay Hill because he was born around there. Chase Farm Hospital and he lived in Carterhatch Lane when he was young. :)

It sounds like you've got a challenge on your hands with the water issues. We need to do half a soil swap, mine is sandy and it doesn't retain water or nutrients.
