On the front page of my android phone, there is a 'weather widget '. I didn't put it there, it's just something that is preinstalled.

It tells me the current weather, in real time, for my current location.

To see the weather widget, I need working eyes. But if I have working eyes, could I not simply get a more accurate report of current local weather conditions simply by , oh I don't know, maybe looking outside?

Why is it that most singers have no accent while performing? Then they start talking and you realize they are "place country name here"!

As I understand it, that's nearly but not quite right. It's something to do with x and y chromosomes.

But, someone can have the male chromosomes but develop many female characteristics, if the mother doesn't produce enough testosterone, or if the foetus is insensitive to testosterone. Somet like that anyway.

I don't understand how any so called intelligent shuman bean can be elected as a politician and then agree to allow fracking in their beautiful country.

First they tell us that fracking is safe. Then they tell us they are considering allowing fracking under national park land, which means they weren't allowing it before, when they were telling us it's safe under our homes.

No argument one way or the other with regard to fracking (my opinion is kept to myself as I try not to get involved in emotive issues on GC - I keep them for elsewhere :heehee:) but I'm not sure the sequence of events mentioned above is correct or whether they are relevant :noidea:.

                Just some info:-

Whether fracking was safe or not was still under discussion for a long time. The relevance to National Parks doesn't really come into it as they are not owned by the government. The ownership is a conglomeration of private owners, local authorities and a variety of charitable bodies that are governed by a set of rules that are different to those outside the Parks. Therefore they weren't certain whether the rules governing the Parks were the same as outside.

Fracking and drilling has always been allowed under private property but it is the depth at which it is done that comes into question. Of course, when I say 'always' I'm referring to more modern times as the law used to say that you owned 'the heavens above and the earth beneath' your property. They cut out the 'heavens above' bit when flying came in but didn't change the rest. The law then allowed for the landowner to receive compensation depending on how far 'beneath' the drilling was done.

This came up recently (about ten years ago) in a case Bocardo V Star Energy where Bocardo were claiming a percentage of profits/turnover from the drilling by Star Energy and were granted it by the court. This was overturned in the court of appeal (with no allowance for appeal to the Lords) as being ridiculous and they granted £1,000 pounds compensation (it was under hundreds of acres of Bocardo land) but Bocardo had to pay most of the costs.

The current situation was that landowners were likely to be entitled to about £100 and this is what the government proposed to overturn (the compensation payments). The fracking itself was, and is, a matter for planning rules and these have also been loosened but are still in line with what was the rule for drilling down and sideways.

National Parks just have different planning rules - and have always had them since they were set up - so have taken longer to be sorted out.

I read in the local rag that where I live is slap bang over a proposed fracking site, they say it's safe but ask the long suffering yanks who are now living with water impurities

I'm not entirely convinced that the same issues would apply in the UK - firstly because our safety and standards are entirely different to those in the US, but also because our water storage and supply systems are completely different too.

Didn't they trial it just outside Blackpool once? And didn't they experience unusual earth tremors at the same time?

I'm on the fence when it comes to fracking. I think it has the potential to reduce our dependency on Russia and the middle east, and I believe it has the potential to be cleaner than other fossil fuels. I also believe that some environmental voices would protest if someone found a way to make energy from dirty air with clean air as the only emission. Incidentally someone up here in the northeast has achieved exactly that but only in lab conditions so far.

But, I also believe that the information meant to reassure is is vague and untested, and that any scientific study will be funded by those biased in favour. Also while I accept that I don't own or need the land a mile below my house, I'm not sure that a probably Chinese or French owned conglomerate of billionaires should own it either.

All in all, I think there are too manyunanswered questions. I'm not opposed to the concept, but I feel that either the proper ground work (pardon the pun) has either not been done, or information is being withheld from us ordinary peasant folk.

Like you @clueless1 I am very much on the fence about it, mostly because I don't really know much about it - however, I am also very aware how things can get blown out of all proportion or misconstrued when posted on the internet, and sadly our US cousins seem to be particularly susceptible to stories that run and run despite the facts
