How about when you want to see who played a member of the cast in a film, you wait until the end, and as soon as the listing is shown, they shrink it to advertise the next programme :gaah:. Drives me mad

Those people who when asked a question or start a converstion with "I mean":wallbanging: Why say that when we know you're saying what you mean. The TV is a great place to hear people being interviewed who start off saying in a conversation "I mean"!!:gaah: It's a though they need some sort of mental reassurance and pause before they actually say what they were going to say. We wouldn't dream of writing a letter starting with the words "I mean" so why do people do when talking??.:dunno:

@ARMANDII , it's pretty much as you say. Speech is a tricky communication method. It's no different to 'erm' and 'err'. It can take a second or two to compose a sentence in your head that accurately conveys the jumbled message floating about in your mind. Many people don't want to pause while they compose what they're about to say, because society has trained in derogatory terms like 'pregnant pause' or 'tongue tied' implying that a pause in speech is an indication of an impediment. So they fill the pause with something, anything.

Like most things, speaking skills can be trained in, but most people just speak as they do without much thought.

Politicians, who should be very skilled speakers, are the worst for it. They fill the pause with 'look, let's be clear' before going on to ramble some incoherent gibberish for long enough to deny anyone else their chance to speak.

I learnt in my early years only to open my mouth when I had something to say and therefore already had what I was going to say in my mind:dunno: I think I would rather have someone start off with a "errr or errm" as it sounds more natural. But to validate a answer or speech by starting off with "I mean" just seems nonsensical to me, and when it's Pundit or Personality who says it then, to me, it reduces the effectiveness of what he/she is saying:wallbanging:.

I agree @clueless1 about the politicians saying 'Look' etc. I listen to radio 4 so hear it all the time . Really annoying.
I have noticed another one that is also done by politicians, but more often than not, scientists or other clever people. They will be asked a question, lets say, 'Was there any significant change in these monkeys?'. They reply with 'SO, in the study we did..........'. I think it might be an American thing. In the UK, it would have normally been, 'Well, in the study we did....'.
                Crikey, it's 2:30am ain't it :ouch1:.
So look, let's get this clear, time for bed .

I had a very well educated friend who used to finish most sentences with a question, such as "Didn't I?" or "Isn't it?". I usually replied "Did you?" or Is it?" and I used to get a blank look from him. He didn't realise that he was saying it!

That doesn't really bother me as a lot of my employees (I used to take them straight from school) used to say it. This was usually because of lack of parental guidance (I normally took them from broken homes) or bad teaching at school. I used to teach them communication skills (necessary for our work) and manners. It was surprising how quickly they learnt everything when they found someone taking an interest :blue thumb:.

Badly spoken or written English only bothers me if it comes from people who should know better - and there are plenty of those! :wallbanging:

It can get quite annoying that aftera while can't it? It's really not necessary is it? It'll do your head in after a while won't it?:)

Up here in the northeast, we say 'like' quite a lot, as in, 'it's a fair walk like' or 'im going to the shops like'.

I remember when I was at uni, we had a Philippino lecturer for network infrastructure. He had such a dry sense of humour. After talking for ages and sketching on the white board to explain how data is transmitted over a wire, and how the transmitting end has to send some kind of code to indicate that the transmission was complete, he turned and said that we do the same thing without realising it when we speak. He said some people simply stop talking while others have a more clearly defined 'delimiter '. He then said he'd noticed that in the northeast he's noticed we have a very common 'protocol ' that completely confused him when he first arrived in the area, and then asked the class if we could tell him what it is. We all sat there confused. All wondering, what is it we say at the end of just about everything. After a while, realising we didn't get it, he turned back to the whiteboard and wrote in massive capital letters, LIKE.

Quite a few people in this area will often end a sentence with "Like", which I have learnt doesn't mean any kind of approval but a kind of confirmation of what they were saying:doh::heehee:
