yep, it's a common misconception that treeferns don't put down bottom roots. They actually put down significant roots and in some cases suckers :)

How serious is the munching ? I get occasional muching, never been a problem. I also notice wasps are partial to the leaves :)
If it's gunnii you can copice it anyway so unlikely to be death by pruning lol :D more likely pruned at the wrong time of year (autumn) to recover...
