Check this out. The bag contains 5lb (just over 2kg) of juicy red eating apples, and the rest are lovely tangy cookers for my apple crumble.

I don't shop at Next. I'd be surprised if the farmer does, so I can't explain the bag, but check this out. £3.24 for this lot.

You can buy an apple tree for that at Lidl.

Nope. 5lb of juicy red eating apples + several pounds of cookers. There's over 16lb of apples in total in that bag.

          They are 20p per pound.

But then I'd be waiting maybe 5 years to get a bag full of apples, and in that time I'd spend more than £3.24 on fertilisers and slug pellets and such.

I have an apple tree. It produced 5 apples in the first year I planted it (it was an expensive already established one). 3 of those apples went straight to the compost because the slugs had nibbled so much it was just too horrible. This year, despite a promising early start, I now have 1 apple maturing on the tree when I last checked.

I have 3 Aldi/Lidl apple trees on my land. 2 were devoured by deer. One is in mesh jail to keep the animals out, but every time it starts to pick up, the greenflies make a mess of it.

I'm thinking I'm not going to bother growing apples now I'd discovered the virtues of buying direct from the farms. It hardly seems worth it. Now damsons, that's a different story. I like them, and the orchard doesn't seem to sell them, so that's next on my list I think.

Nice apples clue, look good eating.

Just out of interest where I work now is a unit on a farm, they have orchards all around the area.
Right next door to our workshop is one of a couple of massive cold stores.

About a month ago we had 5 artic loads of "Pink Lady", delivered from NZ, within the last couple of weeks they have all been shipped out to the supermarkets.
They have started picking now and up to now its been Bramleys, boxes of them into the store for a few days then out.

Must admit I thought apple and pear growing was a thing of the past in Kent, but its only just started, we have all the early eaters to come along with the later Cox type that store until the new year.
Came home with a few top class Bramleys the other day.:blue thumb:

My dad's next door neighbour has said I can have as many apples as I like off their tree but they're cooking apples. I wanted to make some home made cider but not sure what cooking apples will taste like.
