The front garden has been allowed to run riot for past 5 years for a number of reasons. I did post pics a couple of years ago, but it appears my old thread has been lost/ mislaid. Photos have been deleted from computer too, so some imagination is needed as to how bad it had become. I couldn't actually stand in the front garden. The weeds and brambles were chest high - and I'm 5 ft 10.

This is how it looks now :hapfeet::yahoo:. Still a lot to do, but I can now stand in the middle of my front garden. I want to plant something along boundary wall for privacy. Something wind and salt tolerant and fast growing. Suggestions welcome :). Will also need to replace the large dead tree. Thinking of more shrubs and flowers, again need to be Anglesey proof.

Escalonia. My in laws had this when they lived in the west coast of Ireland.

I did consider this, but read that it can be a little tender and doesn't do well in strong winds.

Escallonia is tough Lucius, it'll withstand anything! There was 80ft of this hedging on the boundary with my neighbours garden when I lived on the Isle of Man. I lived in a coastal position there and the weather could be horrendous, a naturally rainy climate, gales and salt air. I had Hebe on the other boundary and that was just as tough. Griselinia is another hedge plant that will withstand bad weather conditions but it grows quite fast and needs trimming more often than the others. I used hedge trimmers on the Escallonia twice a year and once a year on the Hebe hedge.

      Growing Escallonia

I disregarded the Escallonia based on what above link states.

Thank you for all that information Sheal:blue thumb:. I don't think Hebe will be tall enough for out the front, needs to be 6ft tall. I did try Hebe on the strip of land between us and next door but they didn't grow well. All but one died. Survivor is in side garden by caravan and doing well :) I will google Griselinia, not heard of that.

Good luck with your project. :dbgrtmb: It's surprising what can be done when you work at it. :)

You've probably seen pictures of our garden. When we first moved in the garden hadn't been touched for years and it took us three years just to reach the bottom of our garden! We eventually found chicken sheds under the brambles and undergrowth. :rolleyespink:

@luciusmaximus It took us three years to find the bottom of our garden. This chicken shed was completely hidden in the undergrowth.
              10-18-2015_0011.jpg

We cleared almost everything that was growing in the garden, apart from trees, made some lawns out of the chaos and continued to hack back areas
              10-18-2015_07.jpg

In 1976, when we were having an extension built we brought in tons of topsoil (everything was just yellow clay)
              10-19-2015_0023.jpg

              and started making beds
