I saw it full on as I was driving home tonight. I could see the moon and planets clearly, but also could make out the part of the moon that was in shadow too. Hell of a sight.

"How long will they be visible for then"

The moon moves each night, of course, so tonight won't have the same "I'm hiding" effect, but the three of them will still be close to each other, tonight, I reckon. Venus was pretty low down last night - through the trees for me, so I had to walk out into the field to get a clear view - and then it was a bit cloudy.

    Picture shows relative positions at 16:40 for 01-Dec, 02-Dec, 03-Dec and 04-Dec

 Thanks Kristen... I shall keep looking then.... So are they what I was looking at every night nearly in Jamaica, Venus & Jupiter....?????? :dh: Not sure anyway... It was just coming up to the full moon when we got there, but I watched these stars every night almost, as one of them, the brightest, moved across the sky quite fast really &it had disappeared by midnight.! Didn't have any books with me & haven't been able to check it out since I got home... Must have another try later....

Jupiter stays in the sky for several months, Venus for a shorter period, 'coz its closer to the Sun. Venus only ever visible shortly after sunset, or just before sunrise, because it is close to the Sun - so "sets" simialrly. Whereas Mars, Saturn, Jupiter etc., being further away, just amble across the night sky.

So if its very bright, and sets pretty soon after dusk, then its probably Venus. Or Mercury (sets even sooner, and follows even closer to the Sun)

Be careful if looking at Venus with binoculars before the sun has fully set ...

Nows the time to look folks, we have clear skies here and I can see the moon (!) venus and jupiter quite clearly. venus and Jupiter are no-where as close to the moon as yesterday.

:gnthb: Thanks for the info Kristen, it had to have been Venus then... We are lucky, there is not too much light pollution where we are & the stars there are beautiful & so many....!
I am going to go & have a hunt on the net I think & get myself a chart to take with me so I can ID some of them... I say this every time I am there & then forget when I get home.. :dh: So I think I will look in a mow.. Have just stuck it in google so I won't forget this time..!!
