I bought two small 'Brown Turkey' fig trees from my local garden centre at the beginning of the summer.

In the shop, I chose the biggest and healthiest looking plant, one which was already fruiting well. I also chose the second-best plant.

I brought them home and potted them up. The bigger one got a slightly bigger pot. Otherwise, both are in identical positions against a sheltered, sunny south-facing wall.

Almost immediately, the bigger plant (on the left) began to look sickly. Its leaves have developed brown patches and tend to droop. I have had to remove several leaves. The plant looks leggy and generally unhealthy.

The 'second best' tree (on the right) has grown much better. It looks very healthy, upright and bushy, with large and erect leaves.

I water both plants when necessary, but they have hardly needed much water with such a wet summer. I occasionally feed with liquid fertilizer.

Any ideas why lefty hasn't done well? Any suggestions as to what I can do to help him along?
