I tend to leave them in the ground for a month or so - in the hope that it may come back. :blue thumb:

I have no luck with Acers either Woo. They don't like the windy coastal area I live in and give up within weeks of me planting them. I've planted a Sambucus 'Black Lace' instead as it has a similar leaf to Acers and so far it's doing well. :)

I've had an Acer lose all its leaves which came back the following spring, so all may not be lost. It could be a number of things - too dry, too wet, sunburn, etc. Have a look here.

Mind you if you scratch the bark and it's not green underneath then you've lost it.

Hi Woo,I think your Acers are suffering due to the heat you have been experiencing so the leaves have started to shrivel and will then drop off the plant.

Just a suggestion, but give them both a really good water if they are in the ground whenever you have had dry weather so that the roots can take up some moisture. The shrivelling is a natural thing with many trees and shrubs and is a survival strategy to stop the tree/shrub from dying altogether.

If it's any consulation ,my 33 year old Acer succumbed to those two harsh winters we had a couple of years ago plus the drying winds last year.We cut off all the dead branches bar one that was still alive and over the winter it survived and has grown new leaves from the bottom of the trunk which was a bonus.Alas though the one good branch has now got shrivelled leaves probably due again to dryness at the roots despite me watering it a lot in the heat, but we live on a hill and so end up getting lots of winds that batter stuff in our garden so most of our trees have a tendency to lean.

Don't give up on your tres just yet as they could come back better next year.

I notice on my acers that the stems go white and brittle when dead.
Scratch the stems if there is green it's alive :)
I wouldn't move it yet woo. Keep well watered and wait till late autumn to move
              Hope this helps

In the Autumn Woo I agree with Kandy that hot week very drying winds, how long had you been growing it ? my two are ok but they were both having a gallon a water each day and not left one day to dry out but I have noticed the purple leaves have lost some colour

                yes give it a chance
