I'm getting very near to the point of dumping this new lap top, its on windows 8 and nothing seems to work properly.
I kept getting a pop up saying I needed to update flash player, but it just wont work, it keeps saying its encountered a problem and I should try again, when I do, I get a message that its not responding and it just stays there.
I also cant update Java, Chrome and Adobe reader, all of which my security says I should.

On my old pc it was easy, it just updated automatically.

This new one is a real pain in more ways than one, I'm guessing there is something wrong with the settings on the lap top, but the whole set up seem to be a minefield.

It certainly aint built for ordinary people to use.

    OK Pam.
Are you saying its a Firefox problem as opposed to windows 8?
Firefox has been rubbish for quite a while now, it was fine when I was using XP on my old PC, but since "modernising" and getting windows 8 its been nothing but trouble.

I've never been able to install Adobe flash player either. It says it has, then I realise it hasn't. Are people saying it might work if I use Chrome? I usually use IE out of sheer habit.

On my previous lap top I had chrome, had a lot of issues, it is supposed to update automatically, kept getting "you need the latest version of flash" when I tried to update manually it said "you have the latest version", then it said I had two installed and there was conflict, so stopped one , no difference. I think it was about that time I had to replace my xp lap top.

This piece of junk has been badgering me almost from day one to update to windows 8.1, so eventually, thinking it might help with all the other problems, I decided to do it tonight.

Well it took the best part of 2 hours to sort its self out, then it wanted me to sign in????
what hell is that, I've never done that before.
Then it wanted me to get a microsoft account????

Finally after a lot of screen saying almost ready it came on to something I recognised.

But guess what, Chrome doesn't work anymore, it says I'm not connected to the internet, so I'm stuck with lame duck firefox.
Give me my old PC and XP any day, this thing is only a few months old but it will be in the bin shortly.
If I hadn't been coerced into doing so many things on line I'd give up the internet entirely, its just too much hassle.

In fact, I cant connect to any site other than this one.

I haven't had the 'pleasure' of Windows 8 Pete and don't think I'll ever go down that road from the reports I've heard.

Is it possible for you to get it changed to Windows 7, that's much more 'human' or should I say humane!

Sympathies, Pete...I recently changed my lovely, dependable but clapped-out old xp laptop for an 8.1 Toshiba Satellite. Yes, it's horrible, but that's progress for you!:wallbanging: If you haven't got any young relatives to unravel the mysteries, sometimes just typing 'how to ********'(insert whatever you're trying to solve) into Google will come up with a solution to most computer problems. Don't let a machine beat you:) Imagine trying to do it all in French...;)

Well it must be difficult in French, but I'm doing it in double Dutch, or at least it seems like it sometimes.

I dont believe what happened tonight, I switched it on and it took ages to show a screen, it was mostly blank, then I got a message asking if I wanted to let Microsoft manager change my PC.
I couldn't say yes because at the time there was no cursor.
Anyway, eventually after pulling out the battery in my mouse and replacing it the cursor came up.
I went for the Microsoft manager thing, and it seem to be working OK now.

Fingers crossed, I dont trust this thing as far as I can throw it.

Well we are on Windows 8 at work and it has many bugs - disconnects my email and asks me to log in - then says I am not recognised. Disconnects all the drives I must access usually at a very urgent time . It does have some good points....errrr.......errrrr...........errrrr.............oh yes it keeps over 100 IT experts in a job ! Last time I logged a fault, on the corporate site , someone in the Philippines sorted it out with direct access to my PC, was a bit spooky watching the mouse move around by itself.
I would ditch Firefox and move to Chrome it is a more solid browser.
On my PC at home I am going to stick with XP until the bitter end !!!

It all sounds a bit of a nightmare! If you get the chance to upgrade to 8.1 cheaply or for free, try it....it's a bit of an improvement.

Its free, I just did it.#

Trouble I have now to sort out is at some point I must have put firefox as my default browser, just cant remember where I went or how I did it.
I'd like to go over to Chrome, its true firefox is a nightmare these days, not sure why, it used to be really good.

The best thing to use Windows 8 for is to fertilise your potato patch.

It is rumoured that MS are planning something more along the lines of Windows 7 for the next version.

If you don't have any software apps that specifically need Windows, then I think I'd go down the Linux route until MS get themselves sorted out.

Linux Mint is good. It just works. And you can try it without installing it, if you can persuade Windows 8 to burn a CD.
