Looking to purchase good binocular's, got around 60 squid to spend.
Apart from looking at wildlife my house sits under a very busy flight corridor, it would be nice to know what can crash into my poltunnels! :rasp:

Funnily enough I was at a race meeting with my brother last weekend and he had a pair of binoculars with him which were way better the ancient pair I have. I think they are Zeiss ones as took notice thinking I might buy a new pair to replace the dreadful ones I have. Despite being quite small they gave me, anyway a very good view of the action over the other side of the racecourse. I liked them not only because of their ability but also because of their size and weight (quite light). I asked my brother how much they were and he said he thought they were in the £80 bracket but couldn't remember exactly. They certainly were not hugely expensive. Would you like me to ask him which model they are @wavebuster? @ARMANDII may be able to help.He is into all things to do with peering at stuff :lunapic 130165696578242 5:and is much more of an expert than I on the subject I'm sure.

    Hi Silu,
Yes that would be great, they sound ideal for what I need.
Men of a certain persuasion would probably be best suited with a 'monocular' thus keeping one hand free!:loll:

Bad news! Spoke with brother his are Zeiss Jena. Looks like from what I can gather from looking on the net that they aren't made any longer. You can get them 2nd hand FOR A PRICE. I failed to ask Brother how long he'd had his, obviously for quite a while.
Sorry not to be of more help. Looked on Amazon and the cheapest Zeiss pair they do are over £300:yikes:. Maybe someone else will be of more help.

      Hmmm, Silu.
, I'm an expert at nothing I'm afraid.:dunno:;):heehee: However, I do use a pair of binoculars to search a bigger area of the skies at night when looking for anything I might want to target for the scope.
If Wavebuster is wanting to use binoculars for general viewing [i.e. Aircraft observing] then he might want to have a look at the Bresser 8 x 21 Hunter Binoculars which are a nice general purpose pair of binoc's, giving good sharp viewing and costing around £69 [free post on some offers],or the Aculon Nikon A30 10 x 25 [£71].......I have slightly larger binoc's with a wider field of view and magnification but only to help search areas of dark skies easier.

Hi wavebuster, yep, 12 x 50 will give you enough magnification and field of view to do the job. Nikon is, of course, a quality brand and £70 seems a fair price.:dunno::snorky:

I have to say you won't get very good bins for less than a few hundred pounds, really. Don't mean to be negative but it is true. For wildlife watching most people use 8x42, 10x42 or 8x32. My main birding binoculars are Nikon HGL 8x32 with a couple of backup pairs that are 8x42 and 8x36. 10s have a narrow field of view which I don't like. Don't make the mistake of thinking the higher magnification, the better. They are way too heavy and the field of view is restricted. If you live near a wildlife reserve, they often have shops which sell bins and you can try them out to see what suits you. The largest RSPB reserves are very good for this.
