Morning everyone, I've just been having a look to see if my agapanthus needs repotting, from what I've read it likes to be pot bound, it does seem to have thick roots so should i repot or not?

      Hello mazambo:)
Yep, the books often seem to say agapanthus needs to be root bound to flower well. I’m not so sure:noidea:
They grow amazingly well down here in the ground.....on St Michael’s Mount and all over west Cornwall.
Anyway, difficult to say if yours is rootbound...it looks ok to me.....what does it look like outside of the pot?
I would feed with an organic fertiliser or chicken pellets and mulch. Depending on your climate do this now until mid spring. Thereafter a liquid high potash feed during the rest of the growing season. And water too....ok, they like good drainage etc but in pots need not to dry out:)
In one garden I had they grew and flowered abundantly in the well drained soil but they also took up a lot of room...they will spread....so here I keep them restrained by dividing every 4 years or so without affecting their flowering, so far anyway :)

        Hi

Funny enough I have been re- potting up agapanthus today I only go one size next up I use john ins no 3 and add 1/4 xtra grit ... downside with plastic pots even with the more hardy varieties "Deciduous" you need to keep them frost free as it may damage the roots when unprotected. So kept in the greenhouse if possible on the dry side.

What variety is yours ... I have a few diffrent one's now... and two evergreen which are not hardy ...

I've never actually grown them in pots, find they prefer the open ground and flower reasonably well, once established.
Mine have all become shaded out these days, so not so good, I also find they like a bit of moisture during the growing season.

I think the pot bound "thing", as with a lot of flowering plants, is based on, they flower earlier if potbound, but that doesn't actually mean they like being pot bound, they just flower when younger due to the fact they think they are going to die.:yikes::biggrin:

@Spruce, yes I've over wintered mine in the greenhouse, it's called "midnight dream"

Just got it out of the pot, had a struggle though.

Oh yes, definitely needs potting on Mazambo :)
I would soak the rootball in a bucket of water then lightly loosen some of the roots. Prob needs potting on at least 2 sizes up

That'll mean 4 litre pot then, have to get some in, don't suppose a few days will matter it must have been like that when I bought it, I think it was around July last year.

Just an added thought.....if agapanthus are too potbound they may flower but abort them earlier or not develop at all if roots are dry. I had this problem here and a repot with good rich soil produced excellent flowering a year later. :)
In the ground agapanthus thrive in poor soil but in pots the soil quality and nutrients need to be good :)
