I’m considering putting some agapanthus in a big pot. Which variety is best and how many bulbs would you put in a pot?

      Hiya kazzawazza :)
The main thing is not to overpot. Dont put tiny plants in large pots. They will struggle to grow let alone flower.
As the roots fill the pots you can pot on until eventually into large ones. Agapanthus flower best when relatively congested
Varieties? There are masses of them. I dont really think one is any better for pots than another.
I have very small agapanthus as well as the usual bigger varieties; a little beauty is Golden Drop. This has delightful variegated foliage and lots of small blue flowers and this is suitable for a pot, like a terracotta one, where it will look good for foliage alone.

I saw some in a pot when we were in Looe last year and they looked lovely. They were one of the variety with the large blue heads

I potted 11 Agapanthus up last year . As advised in smallish pots , only managed to get a few green leaves from them , no flower stem . My sister had the same problem with them . I'll see if anything happens this year , very disappointing as it's a stunning flower.

I have just this minute been reading about them to see how hard they are to grow. People are saying that the plant often only begins to flower once its roots fill a pot and are slightly constricted. How many should I put in a pot - 4 ?

I used 8" pots and put 3 in each , as advised to keep them a little cramped . Took them from 4 to 8 weeks to show , but not much happened after that .

Hi Kazza, i bought my friend a plant in a garden nursery that was already flowering - A blue one called "Blue Magic" it is stunning i did pay a bit more for it as it was a mature plant, but that way I was guaranteed it was flowering, so if I was recommending buying again I think this i the way I would go as i have heard of folk like @HarryS being disappointed having to wait sometime for them to flower-OK if you have the patience and garden area to do this i suppose, really depends on your needs...Hope you are successful in your choice, please keep us updated :dbgrtmb:

I recently potted up 3 Agapanthus rhyzones (in separate pots). They came from The Factory Shop and came in generic packaging. I have no idea what variety they are. At the moment they are sitting on my mum' window ledge as I have nowhere suitable here. So far 2 of the 3 are shooting. Only time will tell whether they grow into mature plants or not. If they don't it will be a shame but t won't e the end of the world. I only paid £5 for the 3.

So I've only got to wait 3 years then. I had better put the kettle on.
