I visited this lovely castle about ten years ago but didn't have time, or the ready cash, to go inside.
I understand that the mysterious "Northumberland Manuscript" , which, it has been claimed, shows that Sir Francis Bacon had a hand in the writing of Shakespeare's plays, is kept there.

If you take a look at my location, Rosa, you might understand why I envy you living just an hour away from Alnwick Castle!

jack you could always change locations, lived here all my life and can you believe its my fist visit actually in the castle, for work over the years always by-passed alnwick, so it was a lovely experience for me, will go back again as there is so much i missed, the short time we were there, got friends that live just outside berwick so thats how we ended up going, of course the guys stayed in the pub all afternoon and us girls and my friends 2 boys went. Funny how we seldom visit those attractions that are just a stone's throw away from us! I've lived in the South all my life and there are many, many things I haven't gotten around to seeing.
I have to say, as I hurtle towards the qualfying age for a free bus pass, the North of England certainly begins to beckon more as a better place to live.

its a lot cheaper than living in london, are you nearly approaching retirement and do you work in the heart of london, hope you dont mind me being nosey, just i find other peoples lives fascinating, love to see were others live and their lovely gardens that they have created, i guess with you joining gc it must of been the gardening aspect of gc that you had joined

If you're really interested (rather than nosey!)Rosa, some years ago I had a place in Brighton but when my mother became unable to cope at her home in East London I sold it and moved in full-time as her carer. When she died I found that being over fifty I was unable to get full- time regular employment and have had to live off the proceeds from the Brighton sale and whatever temp/casual work I can get. Obviously, after a few years of this, funds have run very low and I'm waiting 'til I can get my hands on my pension lump-sum at 60 (I'm 58) to get the house done-up and make it more sellable. I'm very tempted to move up North (either your area or Cumbria) but, being a fairly-good musician I would love to settle in lovely Vienna (but that's probably a pipe-dream).
I'm afraid there are some areas of my back garden which are far-from lovely and I really need to get someone in to deal with the areas which my bad-back and tennis elbow prevents me from dealing properly with;(I do try to keep the front garden looking pretty though!)

hi jack, you just cant win heard stories like yours so many times and certainly moving north is a cheaper option. I dont have to worry about a garden just have a balcony still got plenty of climbers and flowers on it, jasmine and honeysuckle they are growing very well.
tell me about bad backs i have lower back pain due to a water ski-ing accident in my 20s still get bother to this day, went to hospital and nothing can be done got to live with it. :)what instrument do you play my next door neighbour has a saxaphone, hear him occasionally practising.

Alnwick Castle is fab - we were there last week.

It's also home to the largest tree house! Look at this!!

Great for families too. Interesting stuff for us grownups, and lots for the kids. Our two loved it. And Rosa , how scary was that dungeon!!

Good to see the pics of the castle Rosa, we are planning to visit Northumbria next summer as I have not been there since the 70s and in-house advisor has not been there at all. Hope to go to Lindesfarne, farne islands, Hadrians wall, Kielder forest, all round in fact. anywhere else we should go? [IMG]

Sorry to hear about your back, Rosa.
    I play piano.
Just off to the coast for a few days, so garden (and stray cat!) will have to get by 'til I return.
