    Just wondering whether any of you have grown amaryllis from seed? I have some I collected last year and was wondering whether it was worth trying and if you had any tips? Thanks.

    @Tim David
    I did; quite a few years ago now. I just sowed them onto a seed tray of gritty compost covered with some grit, watered, covered with some newspaper and left on the side in the greenhouse. I got more than enough for my needs, there are a lot of seeds in one capsule and they take a few years from seed to flowering.

      I grew some years ago, and had reasonable results.

      To be honest I think I only got one plant to flower, I got fed up with waiting for the others.

        Hi @Tim David do you mean 'real' amaryllis or hippeastrum? I grew the latter from seed and it took 7 years! But the flowers that came, though only a standard red with white throat, were nicely scented.

          @CarolineL that is a good point; I would treat Amaryllis belladonna in a similar manner though it would probably take longer to flower.
