    Hello from the Midlands.

Owned my first house for a year now and all I've done to the back garden is mown the lawn, dug out weeds (ones that I know, there's possible weeds that I've missed) and yelled at the hound for 'watering' the roses. On my dad's advice I've spent the past year watching what bulbs have appeared and where and also what shrubs/plants have flowered/bloomed so I know what I like and what I want to get rid of. It's a north facing garden with what looks like semi-decent soil and a good sized sunken patio area.

My house was previously a rental property with tenants that appear to have had a penchant for roses, but it was empty for nearly two years so that garden went completely to pot during that time. I am looking forward to getting out there, designing a colourful, dog-friendly garden with raised beds and a seating area to make the most of what sun I get in the garden.

Here is said garden (from my particulars...unfortunately its looking a bit worse for wear now):

      Hello and welcome Melandsimba! :spinning:

From the picture your garden looks lovely, by far not as bad as the jungle that I have, haha!

Anyway, welcome to the forum! :yay:

        Hi Melandsimba,

        :sign0016:

        Welcome to Gardeners Corner :)

The advice I give to anyone starting a new garden this time of year is go slowly with the digging out of plants etc. You may find you have some hidden gems in there, and don't forget Roses can be pruned back even if they appear a bit wild at the moment.

Ok, question. How do I get rid of ivy that's creeping along the bottom of my fence and strangling a couple of roses and a camellia?

Think it's mine. Seems to be mostly my side. It's ground level and just covering everything. Ideas?

          You could pull it out.

I've got some climbing ivy crawling up my fence ... it's coming through from the (non-gardening) neighbour ... I just pull it off where I don't want it  :heehee:

Or, if it is yours, cut the main trunk, or the stems that go to the areas you don't want them to.:dunno::coffee:

I think I'm just going to have a go at it and see what happens. What's the worse that could happen?! :snorky:

They already do that every time their cat appears in their garden with it's tail between it's legs after being chased out of mine by my dog :runforhills:

I really need to post an updated picture. The one I have is from the sales particulars from a couples of years ago and the last owner took a lot of the plants when the house was sold. Will try and get a new picture later today if it ever stops raining!
