This one is by phone . You receive a recorded warning message allegedly from the inland revenue , that they are going to prosecute you . At this stage I always hang up , I presume the scam is asking you to call a number. This will be a £30 a minute premium call or they will try and get your details.
The HMRC would never contact you with a recorded message and 99% of the time contact would be by post.

If you receive any phone call that is a recorded message you should always treat it as a scam. No genuine organisation would do any cold calling by recorded message. Particularly as there are a significant number of home phones that now have one or other form of call blocker on them.

These intercept the call, without letting it ring your phone, and they ask for the caller's name. Without a name being given the call blocker won't put the call through. Therefore recorded messages can't get through. Even with actual people making cold calls you'll find that they won't bother once they hear that their call has been intercepted as they realise that the phone owner is aware of scams.
