Antirrhinum Brighton Rock

Thank you for accepting me as a new member.

I used to grow Antirrhinum Brighton Rock around 10-15 years ago. It was also called by various different names including Bizarre Hybrids. It used to have lovely bold stripes, rather like the image here:


For the last couple of years I have been growing it again, and have been disappointed. The flowers have turned into something completely different and the stripes have disappeared. These are the ones I purchased from Sarah Raven (The picture is very accurate):



I understand that due to poor management of stocks that the original plant can degrade back to it's natural form. I assume this is what has happened here.

I have purchased from Chiltern Seeds, Sarah Raven and Seedaholic. All with the same results. Does anyone still grow these and have a supplier who provides the original stripped type?

I love Antirrhinums but I'm not knowledgeable enough to offer you any help on these particular ones, sorry.

I dont know anything about this strain of Antirrhinum but I assume you were growing them from seed years ago?
I was just thinking that the flowers look almost virused, in a similar way you get this kind of broken colouring in Tulips.

Only other thing that springs to mind is take extra care of the weakest seedlings, they could be the ones with more of this kind of colouring.

Did any of the seed packets have pictures on them, I know Chilterns rarely do, but if so, do your flowers match the pictures.

I've looked on Google but couldn't find any for sale but it was a heirloom variety so it probably isn't the same anymore or it's just the mix that's in the packets.

I've done cuttings from ones I want to keep going, seeds can lead to wishy washy flowers with the multi coloured types.

 

Thanks, yes as mentioned in my OP originally I grew them 10-15 years ago. They go under many names including Brighton Rock, Striped Mix, and many others.

I learnt many years ago to not take any notice of the photographs on seed packets :-)
